Stone sculpture; sandstone head. Orange-yellow fine-grained sandstone. Short hair, no fringe, cut around the ears, lumpy appearance as if thick and curly; there is a groove running from the front hairline just off-centre along the top of the head to the crown (possibly damage or meant to be a parting). Forehead has a bulge on the right and slopes downwards and inwards on the left. Simple oval eyes, now damaged, apparently originally undetailed. The nose is large, aqualine and broad and slopes to the right. The lips protrude slightly and have an upwardly curved groove between. The righ…

Stone head, probably post medieval, 17th century (possibly 19th century). Large human head, carved in the round from a single block of fine grained gritstone. Sub-spherical with high-relief pointed projecting nose, simple pointed oval eyes with no detail modelled, and small, narrow, straight slashed mouth. No modelling of ears, hair or neck. The underside is rough and uneven - this may be broken, or possibly never shaped. It measures 255mm from the nose to back of head, 210mm side to side, and 190mm top to bottom.

An incomplete stone head, probably dating to the late-Iron Age to early-Roman period (c.100 BC-AD c.100), but possibly 19th century. It is missing fragments from its sides. The head has some features which are common on Iron Age heads. These include the lentoid eyes, triangular nose and flat face with a blank expression on it. The head has a bushy but short beard and mosutache. Also notable are the 'radiates' around the top and sides of the face which may represent brushed back hair. The head also appears to wear a large headdress which covers the entire top and back of the head. …

A stone head, probably dating to the medieval to post-medieval periods (AD c.1066-c.1700). The head is quite rectangular in shape and roughly D-shaped in cross-section. It has crudely carved features, including a slightly concave face, lentoid eyes, pronounced brows, a rectangular nose and a slightly protruding upper lip. Around the top of the head is a slightly raised rectangular area, incised with wavy grooves, that either represents hair or a hat. This hair or hat does not cover the top of the head, which is left bald. On each side of the head is a D-shaped depression representing …

A stone Iron Age 'pillar stone' or stele dating to the fourth to first centuries BC. The pillar stone is broadly square in cross-section with slightly rounded corners. It tapers slightly towards its rounded top. The bottom surface of the pillar stone is covered with rectangular grids of small holes. The top half/third of the side faces are decorated with a continuous but irregular pattern of horizontal grooves, occasionally broken with a vertical groove or terminating altogether. Each face is decorated with a different set of carvings. Face 1 is decorated with a rectangular panel w…

An incomplete stone medieval carving (AD c. 1200 - c. 1500), missing a fragment from one corner (a relatively recent break) and fragments from the front (old breaks). The sculpture has been carved into a block of Birchover Sandstone in sunk relief. The left, right and bottom edges of the block project forward further than the figure depicted. The sculpture depicts a man tilting his head upwards and grinning. The sculpting is quite naive so it is difficult to discern exactly what he is wearing. He appears to be wearing a long striped doublet or cassock. Hanging from his neck is a po…
