A rough out for a Neolithic axe. The axe is knapped from a mid green/grey volcanic tuff which has developed a mottled brown coloured patina. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash that is found in Britain in a band that runs from the Lake District (the Langdale’s source Group VI), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can be flaked, ground and polished. Considering the findspot, the source for this axe is from Langdale. The rough out is an irregular drop…

A flake of stone probably a waste flake from making a Langdale Axe, dating from the Early Neolithic Period. There were quarries for the stone for axes in Langdale. The lumps of stone were roughly shaped at sites not far from the quarries before being taken down into the valleys to be ground and polished into their final form. This flake was probably removed when roughly shaping an axe. There are facets from previous removals on the flake. The stone is Langdale Tuff.

A group of 8 Post Medieval coins: a three pence of Charles II, two half crowns of William III, a half crown of Anne, a shilling of George I, and three shillings of George II. All are official British coins, and will thus have been struck to the sterling standard, i.e. 92.5% fine metal. They range from the reign of Charles II in 1684 to the most recent coins, two shillings of George II dated 1745. These last are both in good condition with little wear, whereas the older coins shows significant wear, so it is legitimate to view the group as probably one batch deposited together in th…
