Cast copper alloy head of a crossbow brooch. The cross bar is stepped. The central and collared side knops are integrally cast, all three are the typical 'onion' type knops. The pin is missing with the exception of the very top, from which it is evident that this brooch sported a hinge pin. The brooch is broken where the bow would have met the crossbar.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy drum-shaped object. The object is similar in design to an item found at Winterton Roman Villa, identified as a 'reel', however, this object has a much larger central perforation than the Winterton example. There is no decoration. The object has a distinctive cylindrical drum shape with a narrow centre and flared terminals. The perforation runs through the centre of the object from top to bottom; it is irregularly formed at either mouth. The hole is filled with some kind of concretion or mineralisation. Another suggested use is as a spool, for example for thread.
