An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date, c. BC 3500-1200. The axe is pointed oval in cross-section with lateral facets (flattened upper and lower edges). It tapers towards one of the edges which terminates with a narrower, abraded and chipped butt. The wider cutting edge is missing with a worn break and a sub-oval fracture extetending into the body of the axe. The surfaces are smooth and polished, with some chips and edges missing, which is likely to be caused by post-depositional damage. The axehead is 111.55mm long, 57.46mm wide, 30.66mm thic…

An incomplete fragment of a probable polished stone axehead, dating to the Neolithic period (length: 83mm; width: 37.2mm; thickness: 14.9mm; weight: 63.92g). This probable artefact appears to have been made of an igneous rock, possible dolerite. There are various recent scratches on the polished surface.

An incomplete polished stone axe, dating to the Neolithic period ( length: 75.3mm; width: 37.9mm; thickness: 21.1mm; weight: 82.06g). This finely grained stone could be sandstone or siltstone, as it also has a soft texture. There are various recent scratch marks on the surface, but no extensive evidence of use, posibly indicating that the artefact may not have been used.

An incomplete polished axehead, of Neolithic dating (c. 3300 BC to c. 2200 BC) The polished axehead has been made from a soft sedimentary stone, and it now exhibits a weathered surface. It is sub triangular in shape, with a pointed oval cross ection. The blade and the butt are incomplete, leaving the cutting edge in complete. Some flakes have been removed from the sides and the blade. It measures 155.0 mm in length, with a maximum width of 60.0 mm at the blade, and a minimum width of 22.0 mm at the butt. It is 28.6 mm thick. It weighs 297.3 g. The axehead is a mid grey colour, with …

A near complete Neolithic polished stone axe/axehead, dating to c. 4000 - 2200 BC. The axehead is formed from a fine grained volcanic tuff, possibly from Langdale although it is not as fine grained as other examples.  It is impossible to say for certain without petrological analysis of the rock. The axe is a pointed oval shape in plan with a wide crescent shaped cutting edge. All the knapping scars have been removed through polishing. The butt end is incomplete and has a small section missing. The cutting edge is also damaged, there is a large semi-circular missing…

Almost complete Neolithic flint polished axehead, with a chip to the butt end resulting in the loss of one corner. It is c.130mm in length and tapers from c.20mm wide at the butt end to 49mm at the cutting edge. Its maximum thickness is 26mm. The axehead is orangey-brown in colour with light milky patination. The surface of the axe is not entirely smooth - there a number of chips flanking the sides of the body (?since manufacture). A large piece of flint has been gouged from one of the faces - the flint below is rather more orange than brown with little patination, suggesting this happ…

Petrolologists report says "We do not get many of these. Incomplete Neolithic polished axehead, badly chipped and showing some iron staining. The flint is 95% patinated, except for one patch which is a transluscent grey. Its incomplete length is 112mm, its width 52mm at the broken end and narrowing to 40mm in width at the other. It weighs 242.46g and is max 32mm thick. Polished axeheads are sometimes thought of as ritual items, although some have clearly been used and this one looks like it has had a rough time of it!

Early Neolithic polished stone axehead or possibly an adze. The tool is incomplete (the butt has broken away) and has been ground so that the surface is smooth. The width of the axehead/adze is unusually narrow and it may have been ground for reuse or used as a small adze. The blade edge is complete and is sharp. The stone is a bluish grey colour and is likely to be Langdale stone - known as greenstone. The greenstone comes from the intrusion of a narrow vein of tuff in the volcanic rocks of Great Langdale in Cumbria. The stone was suitable for making highly polished axes as well as r…

A nearly complete polished Neolithic stone axehead (c.3500 - 2351 BC). The axe is an elongated piriform shape in plan with a crescentic cutting edge, and an elliptical profile. It has been finely polished overall but has suffered later modification resulting in a fractured and uneven surface; the butt of the axe has a moderate removal, with extensive removals on both surfaces of the axe at the crescentic cutting edge. Additional moderate retouch is visible along the mesial edges of one surface. The axe has a fine light grey to white colour overall. The axe measures 146.8mm in lengt…

A fragment of a Neolithic polished flint axehead. The axehead has been severely damaged, with numerous flakes having been removed from the polished surface so that only part remains. Of the axehead, only the cutting end remains, with the bulk of the object lost. It is possible that the axehead has been reused at a later date to provide flakes. The axehead is oval in cross section. It tapers sharply from its original width to a triangular butt that has been created through knapping the object down. Length: 71.39mm Width: 56.5mm Thickness: 26.35mm Weight: 108.5g

The axehead is lenticular in cross-section and side profile, with one almost straight long edge and the opposing one gently convex. Both faces are badly plough damaged with many large surface chips, but the surviving edges are intact with some damage to the butt end. A complete polished hardstone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is 123.6mm in length and 61.3mm wide, with a lenticular side profile and an oval cross section 37mm thick. The butt is rounded and the sides flare slightly towards the blade end before narrowing into the curved cutting edge. One face demonstrates damage from weathering, whilst the other side remains smooth with visible striations from polishing. This suggests that the axehead has spent considerable time partially buried in riverbed sediment with only one face exposed to the moving water. The axehead is made from…
