An incomplete, gilded cast copper-alloy imitation of a Kentish 'keystone garnet' disc brooch of c. 6th-century date. The brooch has lost its pin and has suffered some removals from its edge. It is the size of an Avent (1975) Class 2 brooch, while bearing the more simple ornament of the smaller Class 1. The central raised setting is a simple circle (Dia.: 8.1mm) (Avent (1975, 81; Fig. 8) Type 1.1), now empty. At the cardinal points are four triangular keystone settings with their points inwards (Avent (1975, 80; Fig. 5, Type 5.1). All four contain fragments of what is probably red g

A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. It is plausible that there would have been a similar opposing arrangement, but the artefact has now broken. The object widens from c. 5.1mm at the break to a maximum width of c. 7.5mm. It the tapers to a width of c. 4.2mm before the terminal (max. W.: 9.8mm). There is a perforati…

A complete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Western Group). of CD PH 5.b4. At the head are the characteristic wing tip plate extensions, pierced to take the extant, square-section axis bar. The rearward facing lug which protrudes from the centre of the head holds the chord of the spring mechanism. The spring survives with minor losses, four coils either side. On one side the coil turns into the central pin, which may have suffered some losses at its tip. The semi-cylindrical wings that cover the spring and have tips that rise sl…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. This is a one-piece example with rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 6.3mm). This hook retains the external chord of the spring; at one end the spring beyond is lost, along with the pin. On the other side the spring coil is complete and curves through three loops from the point at which it emerges from the head. These coils are covered in orange corrosion product perhaps suggesting that the axis bar was made of iron. Above the spring are two flat w…

The brooch is made of an Anglo-Saxon silver penny of the Sovereign type of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), issued in the late 1050s by the moneyer Ægelwerd of London. Although it is difficult to be certain given the secondary treatment, it appears to be struck from the same reverse dies (and possibly the same obverse dies) as an example in the British Museum collection, BMC ii, p. 412, no. 998. The coin has been gilded on the reverse and has been pierced three times so that brooch fittings could be secured to the obverse with rivets. This is part of a growing body of similar fin…

A cast copper-alloy fragment of a Roman knee brooch dating to the 2nd century or 3rd century AD. This brooch has broken at a mid point on the bow; the upper bow, head, spring mechanism and pin were all lost as a result. In profile the bow was S shaped; the lower 'C' survives. As the upper bow would have been, the leg is a thick strip, rectangular in cross-section. As implied, the leg is concave, curling round on itself at the foot. Around the point of break there is a transverse moulded ridge on both faces. The lowermost is on the rear and marks the start of the moulded upper bow. The…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of an eagle (c. 2nd century AD). The losses are confined to the lower surface on which the pin lug is abraded and the pin lost. The plate is flat by nature, but slightly curved in profile as a result of old damage, with the tail bent downwards somewhat in particular. The bird faces to the right with a pointed beak and a possible shallow indentation for the eye, filled with what appears to be niello.
