A complete Medieval gold annular brooch (1400-1500). Treasure case no. 2013 T72. This brooch is complete. The frame is circular in plan with a width of 5.34mm and is constricted for the pin. The upper face has been engraved to bear a legend and motifs. There are six evenly spaced chevrons and each is cross-hatched within. This design may represent a star. Circular gold sheet enriched with filigree ornament, granulation and inlaid gems. The sheet is circular but is now bent back on itself along one side. The upper surface is decorated with a central circular setting made from an upright strip of gold surrounded by a collar of gold twisted wire. A small gold annular brooch with pin still attached that dates to the 13th-14th century. The frame of the brooch is very small epically when compared to contemporary examples with an external diameter of 9mm, and an internal diameter of only 7.5mm. Nonetheless, the top edge of the brooch is still highly decorated with a series of moulded detailing consisting two raised collets at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock on the frame, both have a sub-triangular profile with a mounting for a stone or glass (both now missing) at its apex.
