Medieval gold annular brooch. Flat-sectioned frame with two opposed oval collets which taper towards the top, one containing a purple cabochon stone, probably amethyst or garnet, the other a blue cabochon, perhaps a sapphire. There is a flanged transverse ridge on the upper face at either side of the narrowing for the cast pin. The pin is D-sectioned, with a half round segmented collar next to the loop. The pin rest is formed from a separate lozengiform plate soldered to the frame and decorated with an engraved star formed from eight radiating grooves. Separate soldered arms spring fr…

Description: A circular gold and garnet setting, possibly from a brooch, pendant or another piece of jewellery. The setting comprises a gold collar made from an upright strip of gold surrounded by three strands of gold beaded wire, the central strand perhaps slightly larger than the others. The beading shows some signs of wear. The gold strip is partially folded underneath the gem, which is probably a garnet. It is cabochon cut with a flat top and an annulet drilled into its centre, now empty but once perhaps inlaid with another material (see Discussion). The back of the gem is dished…

Description: Small gold annular brooch of medieval date, with inscription. The frame is circular with a triangular cross-section, flat and undecorated on the reverse. The inner angle of the front  is decorated with a groove within which is a line of fine, neat beading; under a lens it can be seen that this has been stamped, as each bead is surrounded by a slight upstanding circle. The outer angle has an inscription in seriffed capitals which is not immediately readable, and is discussed below. The frame is interrupted by a constriction for the pin. The gold pin survives…

Description: Small gold annular brooch with pin constriction and projecting clasped hands. The circular frame is mainly triangular in cross-section, but this is interrupted by the pin constriction at 12 o'clock, the clasped hands at 3 o'clock, and two quatrefoil flower bosses at 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock. The pin constriction has a tiny transverse ridge to either side. The clasped hands have the thumbs uppermost, and the fingers above the thumbs are very slightly separated, but not apparently enough to hold something like a bead. The space in between has some hard so…

The mount comprises a gold baseplate, slightly crumpled, cut to a curved tapering form with a straight wide end, to fit the recessed cell of a (now missing) gilt bronze or silver penannular or pseudo-penannular brooch. The outer face of the baseplate is decorated with a spherical blue glass bead set in a gold collar, and a pattern of S- and Z-scrolls delineated by beaded wire (filigree) and other motifs (C-scrolls with central scrolled stems) within a plain beaded wire border. To one side of the bead is a now empty rectangular collet. The overall length of the base-plate is 22.5mm;…

Gold; finder’s analysis suggests 22 carat. Brooch. Frame of a brooch of oval or rhomboid form. A thin cast moulded front of curvilinear floral design inhalf relief is attached to a flat back-plate, so the body of the brooch is actually hollow. Front and back are crimped together to provide a setting for an oval stone (now lost). The field of the display face has a slightly rough or stippled surface, so as to emphasise the decorative detail which it surrounds. A long strand of gold wires was wound about the central setting, and at least seven wires each terminating in a small pelle…

Gold annular brooch. Cast band retaining a cast collared pin in a neat constriction. The band is of unusual form, of two distinct halves either side of the pin position. To one side, the band is of solid triangular section with a flat back; lettering appears along both of the front faces; within the band this reads: N E L V [?]O, punched with repeated drafts of a small pointed tool; around the outside of the band lettering reads E S V [?]I [?]I E N L, or possibly E S W I E N L, these letters being more finely rendered by incised strokes. The other half of the band has the upper p…

Gold annular brooch. A tiny but superbly finished annular brooch with a band of plano-convex section. The convex display side has a deeply incised and closely spaced chevron pattern around the entire band, conferring a vermiform effect. The chevrons are interrupted only by a constricted seat for a collared cast gold pin. The reverse of the band bears stamped letters, each set in an indented rectangular panel, and each formerly inlaid with a dark and contrasting material, perhaps niello. The inscription reads: + AVE NARIA GRA, with the first letter R concealed by the end of the pin. Av…

The display face of the brooch bears remarkably fine floral decoration of twisted wires of two or three distinct gauges, and clustered pellets of at least two sizes, the largest along the outer edges being of 1.7mm diameter. Gold annular brooch. A tiny plain round-section frame of thickness 1.5mm with a cast collared pin set at a constriction – whether the frame or the pin was closed to achieve this is uncertain. The collar on the pin is finely textured, perhaps with vegetal ornament. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350. In the light of its age and material, this object is to be subjected to the Treasure process, Ref. 2021 T517. Diameter: 11.2mm, Band Width/Thickness: 1.5mm, Weight: 1.05g.

Gold annular brooch. Cast D-section band with a constriction for a cast tapered pin which is looped around the band. The convex display face bears a finely defined chevron motif, with V-shaped figures with internally indented edges confining strands of closely juxtaposed pellets, possibly in overlapping doubled rows. These were presumably stamped to achieve the fine definition observed here. The chevrons nest one within the next in a series originating and ending at the pin seat. The plain back appears lightly bevelled towards the central aperture. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350 …

Very fine medieval gold annular brooch dating from the 15th century. The brooch is hollow cast and is hemispherical in section. Part of the frame is made up of a pair of very finely cast three-dimensional clasped hands, the right hand faces the front and is positioned over the left. There is a raised band immediately below the knuckles suggesting the end of a sleeve. The left hand, facing the back of the brooch, has the same band but is less pronounced probably due to wear.
