An incomplete Roman copper-alloy circular Disc brooch. The central, circular setting is missing and is surrounded by an intact and raised copper-alloy flange. At the centre of the central recess there is a copper-alloy concentric moulding or dimple and there are traces of enamel of indeterminate colour surviving. There is a raised copper-alloy raised border at the outer edge and in the area between these borders there are curving stamps with traces of gilding surving. The pierced D-shaped lug would have held the missing sprung pin. The short, deep catchplate is bent and has a return.

The head has a centralspot of copper-alloy surrounded by traces of red enamel, representing the eye. The ear has a shallow, oblique groove with an incised line and the tip of the ear is missing. The main field of the body is divided into threerecessed zones which would all have held enamel, although it is only the central recess where the red enamel fully survives. The catchplate is complete and the sprung pin which is mostly missing but with corroded traces surviving, is…

Incomplete early Roman copper alloy possibly Hod Hill Aucissa derivative brooch. 43-70 AD. The bow is intact but the catchplate and hinge pin are missing. The hinge for the pin was formed by the rolling of the head back onto itself with a vertical slot for the pin. The bow has a central ridge decorated with 2 bands down its length. The bow curves out in a similar manner to an Aucissa brooch. The bow shows signs of tinning or silvering. The bow tapers to a waist and there is a cut foot at the bottom. A Roman copper alloy plate brooch dating to circa AD 80 – 350. The object is rectangular in form with a depiction of a fish on the front face. The reverse has the spring and pin mechanism intact on the reverse. The spring is held within two pierced semi-circular attachment plates with an axis bar between holding the pin. The spring has one turn either side of where the pin then extends. On the opposing side of the plate is the catchplate. This is a rectangular projection that appears to be damaged as there is no fold to catch and hold the pin closed. The fish is in the f…

An incomplete Roman Headstud bow brooch of 1st to early 3rd century date. The fragment is of the bow and catchplate.  The bow is rectangular in shape and narrows towards the foot, which then widens at the base. There are three transverse lines across the foot of the bow. The front is decorated with central lozenges and triangular shapes on either side, creating an intersecting pattern. There is none of the original enamel remaining; the object is brown in colour and a green patina has developed on the raised decoration. The fragment has been distorted, resulting in a slightly S-s…

Incomplete Roman copper alloy plate brooch of the bridge type, missing its spring, pin, lower projection and catchplate and some enamel decoration. It measures an incomplete 26mm in length and weighs 4.29g. It would have originally measured c.33mm in length. The surviving upper projection has a single pierced lug to the reverse for a spring attachment. Hattatt comments that this particular type of brooch is particular to Britain, and that the only six known examples are all from the south (Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, 1989, p.148).
