Cast copper alloy foot, probably of a cruciform brooch. The surviving portion of the foot shows a zoomorphic design of a stylised animal head, created with mouldings and ridges in relief. Behind the head the recessed face hides the catchplate. The object is broken just above the top of the catchplate and at the animal's snout on the terminal.

Cast copper alloy brooch, probably the incomplete terminal of a cruciform brooch. The object comprises a zoomorphic terminal showing a stylised snout and eyes. Coming up from this terminal are two broken tags showing probable moulded bands of ridge and pellet decoration. Moving further up the central body of the brooch terminal are two further broken tags, one of which is more extended; this is right-angled in plan, and may once have connected to the tag below it, creating an openwork motif on the brooch.

A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon long Brooch, consisting of the curved bow, with part of what is probably the catchplate on the reverse. It consists of a roughly rectangular plate (4.6mm thick) curved in section and broken at both ends. Each end has a flat panel and there is a fragment of flat footplate or headplate at one end. This has a ridge on the reverse, right next to the start of the bow, which is a more common place to find a catchplate; this would identify the flat area as part of the footplate. Decoration on the bow consists of a simple horizontal ridge and two horizontal dividi…

A cast copper alloy knop from a 6th Century Anglo-Saxon brooch. Only the single knop survives. The knop is D-shaped in profile and has become detached from the main body of the brooch. The profile of the knop is very elaborate. It is formed from a double collar, which then tapers inwards, before tapering out again into a cone, the cone then terminates with a collar. There is a central circular perforation through the centre of the knop. The fragment is worn and is a pitted mid brownish-green colour. Similar brooch knops can be seen in West et al, 1998, p90 and p240, fig: 122, 7-11.

Cast and carved disc brooch dating from the Early Medieval period. The object comprises a flat-sectioned disc with carved and gilt decoration. The decoration is located within the confines of a band of metal, this being the rim of the brooch; the decorative elements were carved, leaving raised lines in the metal. The motif comprises two spirals, separated from each other and the lower half of the motif. The lower half of the motif comprises two outward-facing trumpet-shaped cells with smaller spirals underneath. Traces of gilding survive in across the face of the brooch. There is…

A fragment of a copper alloy Small-Long brooch dating to the fifth or sixth centuries AD. The fragment comprises a portion of the bow and the foot. The bow has broken off, on the arch. There is an upside down raised T decorating the arched section. Below this the flat panel is undecorated. The catchplate extends out the back of this panel and has also broken, as the return of the catchplate is missing. Below the panel on the front there are two parallel raised collars. These extend and taper outwards into the flared foot proper. The expanded foot as a horizontal moulding along the ba…

An early Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 6th Century. The brooch has a trapezoidal head, which is very damaged and corroded around the edges. The corroded remains of the lug can be seen. The brooch has a high arch, with some incised decoration. The lower part of the bow is lozenge shaped and flat. The foot and catchplate have broken off. Only the stump of the catchplate remains. Similar to an example in Hattatt, p376, Fig: 235.

A cast copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 6th – 7th Century. Small-long brooches tend not to have the side knobs or lugs. The brooch has a rectangular head plate. No decoration can be seen as the surface is so badly corroded. The upper part of the bow survives, with a convex arch- with a raised spine down the centre. The brooch is then broken below this, the break is worn. The break has resulted in the loss of the lower bow and foot. On the reverse of the head there is a small, central pierced loop. There is iron corrosion around the loop. The metal is badly corroded and t…

An incomplete cast copper alloy disc brooch of Early-Medieval date, Jansson type II A. The brooch is circular and domed with a slightly raised circumferential rim. The upper surface is decorated with a Borre-style design consisting of three cat-like animal heads facing into the centre of the brooch. On the reverse the remains of a double pin-lug and catch-plate project at parallel points on the edge of the brooch. Traces of iron corrosion within the pin-lug suggest the pin was made of iron. A third loop is also present on the reverse of the brooch mid-way between the catch-plate and t…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy cruciform brooch. This small piece includes the eyes, eyebrows and snout. Jim Halliday suggests that this may be the portion of the brooch between the bow and the catchplate. Part of a similar artefact was found on the same site in 2004 and it is possible that they two fragments may be from the same brooch. This artefact dates to the 6th or 7th century.

A cast copper alloy cruciform brooch of the 6th or 7th century. This is a fine piece, apparently well-made and in good condition. The brooch has a good dark green patina. The brooch was incomplete until recently, when the finders located the ‘head’. Although in two pieces, it appears that the brooch is complete (unless there were side mounting on the head, still lost). The brooch is very regular in shape, and slightly convex in section through the body (the reverse is slightly hollow along its length). The head is a rough square, with decoration set in from the slightly concave si…

A cast copper alloy long brooch. The brooch is almost complete, lacking only the pin and a small portion of the ‘head’; the catchplate is also broken. The brooch is fairly basic in design, and not very symmetrical along its centre line. The head is decorated with pairs of lines along the edges of the ‘cross’; inside these lines are lines of V-shaped stamps; in the centre of the head may be the remains of a group of ring-and-dots. This brooch probably dates to the 7th or 8th century, and may represent a disturbed grave.

A copper alloy side knob from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5th - 6th Century. The knob is flat on the underside and domed on the upper side, semi circular in section. The knob consists of a rounded terminal end and a collar incised with two horizontal lines. At the attaching end there is a projecting copper alloy plate in the upper half of the section, below this there is the remains of the corroded iron pin which would have secured the knob to the wing. As the knob is hollow, this iron corrosion can also be seen inside the main body of the knob and a small tip on the …
