Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy two-piece, circular, hollow-domed button with moulded central fleuret with five petals, surrounded by another larger fleuret with five heart-shaped petals, all within a border of ten arcs. The back of the button is missing its loop but the base of the attachment remains where the loop would have been soldered on. Read (1988) illustrates an example with similar decoration on page 146, No.979, which is dated to the 17th century. But he also illustrates a bridle boss with a very similar pattern on page 180, No.1223, which is dated to the early 18th century. Bailey…

Cast gilt copper alloy two-piece button, circular in plan and flat in section, with a circular disc surrounded by moulded openwork decoration in the form of fourteen domed annulets, each with a border of tiny pellets. The back of the button retains its circular loop which has been soldered on as a separate piece. The upper face of the button is very corroded but the back retains some of the original gilding just inside the edge of the circular plate. Bailey (2004) illustrates two similar examples, on page 71, Figs.9.248 & 9.249, which are both dated to the 18th century.

Cast copper alloy hooked mount from a sword belt hanger with two separate missing rivets. Inverted, the mount has a trefoil top, above the upper rivet, and two bifid projections on its body, the lower ones on either side of the lower rivet. The hook is zoomorphic, probably a swan's neck and head and there is a moulded pattern of foliage in relief on the outward face, but the surface is quite corroded. There is also residue remaining around the two rivet holes on both sides of the mount. The picture shows the mount inverted to how it would have been used, along with others, hooked onto…

Cast lead weight, rectangular in plan and profile, and flat in section. It has been incised at one end with the letters 'M' and 'N' which might refer to someone's initials. The top face has also been incised with a single horizontal line down the middle of the weight. Small flat lead rectangular or square weights are often termed 'Apothecary weights' which were used from the 15th to the 17th centuries, once the mass of the English penny declined steeply and the current penny could no longer be used as a substitute for a weight, especially for sensitive purposes such as making medic…

Silver Republican legionary denarius of Mark Antony, c.32-31 BC, travelling mint, RRC 544/26 Stamped with an 'N' on the obverse which is a banker's mark. Were it an imperial or official countermark it would be a punched die (Sam Moorhead pers comm). This coin likely came in with the Roman army during the 1st century AD. However, Mark Antony denarii are known to have remained in circulation until the 3rd century AD.

Brass sestertius of Marcus Aurelius as Augustus (c.AD 161-180), Victory holding shield on trunk of palm tree with VIC PAR on shield, 2nd issue, c.AD 166; BMC 1290; RIC 934-5 This coin was struck to celebrate the Roman victory over the Parthian army in the East (note VIC PAR on the shield). The Romans even reached the Parthian capital Ctesiphon, in modern Iraq, which they sacked in AD 165. This coin is square in shape and would have come from a square blank clipped from a rectangular row of blanks, which was common way of producing sestertii in the 2nd century AD.

Incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axe head, missing its side loop, mouth and moulding. The mouth would have been sub-rectangular in plan. The surface is worn and pitted, especially along the casting seams, but there is a layer on one face that remains so that three ribs are still visible, between the side edges of the axe head. The ribs extend down about three quarters of the length of the body of the axe head, and the central rib is more pronounced and appears to be the longest. Half of the other face is missing, and has exposed the organic material still held within the axe. The…

Copper alloy coin weight depicting a ship on the obverse with a fleur de lis to the left of the mast and a lion passant to the right. The weight is uniface with the reverse blank, although some marks can be seen, possibly as a result of the flans being adjusted to weight by filing, or the weight having been struck on an anvil, or another flat surface which may have been patterned. The surface is too corroded to be sure. These coin weights were produced in Britain from the 15th to the 16th centuries to check the weight of the gold noble. Stamped incomplete silver book binding or bar mount in the shape of a sword, with a 'pommel' and 'hilt', in plan, and flat in profile. There are two tiny rivets inside the bifid 'hilt' section and an etched pair of initials 'L' 'I' with oblique lines filling in the interiors of the letters. These are incomplete and trimmed at either edge, suggesting that this piece might have been cut from a larger piece with more lettering on it. Incomplete cast lead papal bulla of Pope Clement VI (1342-1352), with the name in relief CLE/MENS/PP VI on the reverse, a floret above and below. The small floret at the start of the text, and the reversed bar to the 'N' are characteristic of bullae of Clement VI. The obverse is very worn and only a few pellets remain that would have formed part of the border and surrounded the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul, to the left and right of a cross in the centre.
