Copper alloy coin, possibly a counterfeit of a French douzain of the later 16th century (Ed Besly pers comm).
Or "it might be a sol parisis of Henri III (1551-1589) or Henri IV (1589-1610) of France. These coins have hollow crosses on the reverse, that are also quite short with fleurs-de-lis on the ends. The cross here is certainly hollow, but I am not sure if it is short or if it is just the corrosion taking over. It is the right size (c. 2cm) for this as well. The obverses have a crowned H with fleurs-de-lis around, but I cannot see anything on this" (Barrie Cook pers comm).

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Roman finger ring with an oval bezel and a hoop that narrows from its widest point either side of the bezel, and is semi-circular in section. The bezel is incised with a bird motif with linear legs protruding at oblique angles from its ovate body to a horizontal line as the ground. The bird appears to be more of a hen than a cockerel, which was associated with the god Mercury, or a bird of prey, like an eagle, which would have military, normally legionary, associations as on an intaglio in the Museum of London's collections (Murdoch, 129, No.299). Similarly depicted …

Cast gilt copper alloy double-loop, sub-rectangular buckle frame with all over moulded surface decoration. The frame also has two opposing, oblique, bifid knops on each end, as well as two opposing, oblique, bifid knops on either side of the central ones at each end of the missing strap bar.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example with bifid knops and a strap bar on page 79, No.494, which is dated to c.1600-1700; and another which is tinned, with similar…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy receptacle leg, rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in section, with a central mid-rib on one side. The foot end also has a rounded, broken extension, perhaps a tapered 'toe', or perhaps it was mis-cast. The foot end of the leg thickens to 48 mm and the broken top end, which would have attached to the body of the vessel, is 37 mm thick. This large leg probably came from a cauldron. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example of a receptacle legs on page 95, No. 588, which is dated from the 13th to the 17th century. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a Westcountry ca…

Pressed sheet copper alloy oval strap union and square plate, perhaps used as a book binding. The square cover plate has four rivets, two of which attach it to the folded trefoil fixing plate beneath, with a folded loop to hold the buckle. The other two rivets hold a narrow rectangular plate on the back of the cover plate. There are the remains of the leather strap, held by the rivets, between the front and both back plates. This suggests to the recorder that the object cannot be very old as organics do not survive well in the local acidic soil, unless preserved in anaerobic condition…

Cast copper alloy sword scabbard chape with a serrated top edge above heart-shaped and trefoil openwork apertures. Below the apertures are transverse radiating ridges, echoing a shell, ending in a basal knop. The chape would have had a separate back plate, now missing. Read (2001) illustrates a very similar example from Lincolnshire on page 90, Fig.58, No.685, which is dated from the late 15th century to the 16th century. Williams (1999) illustrates another very similar example from Dorking on page 186-7, Fig.10, No.90, of which he says: "These castellated shells are typically Tudor i…

Cast copper alloy double-looped bit or bridle link with a debased zoomorphic head in centre between a circular looped terminal at one end and a square terminal at the other end. The head has two eyes, in relief, with a brow ridge above and a triangular nose section between them. It appears to have an iron stud at the end of its nose or coming out of its mouth, which may have had something mounted onto it. It appears to be related to cheek pieces of Will…
