Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted so that the recorder cannot determi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy bow brooch with twisted wire extensions for wings and a circular rivet hole between the extensions, at the head of the brooch, possibly for a head stud. The pin is missing but part of the catchplate remains at the base of the bow. Camerton B Colchester derivative (Sally Worrell pers comm) 1st century AD (Dr. J.D. Hill pers comm) Olivier in Barrett et al. (2000), illustrates similar examples, with applied rivets, from Cadbury Castle, on page 140, Nos. 37-8, which date from c.AD 43-70 (Sally Worrell pers comm). Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Aesica-variant brooch with a central disc on the bow and the remains of a fantail beneath it. On the back of this broken and truncated fantail is the top edge of the catchplate. The disc on the middle section of the bow has a central, circular setting with a stud still extant on the back of it. There are also fan-shaped recessed sections emanating out from the central setting, which may have originally held enamel in separate fields. The remains of the crossbar show that is was a hollow tube for the axis, on which the pin is hinged. The axis and the …

The head has a beaded crest with plain flanges either side of the head, and moulded oblique lines on the front of each side of the crossbar. Below the crest, the bow tapers towards the foot with moulded cross-grooves and a pair of cross-ribs surrounding a central moulding. Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged T-shaped brooch with the remains of some red and yellow enamelled decoration. The enamel is set into a panel of alternating triangular and lozenge shapes running the length of the bow on the upper face. This type and pattern of decoration is similar to Hull's 'Sawfish' brooches, but the sides of the bow do not now have these projections and it is narrower than this type, but consistent with other examples of T-shaped brooches. Half way down the back of the bow are the remains of the attachment edge of the catchplate, and the footknob is plain a…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged T-shaped or Colchester derivative tapering bow brooch. The bow is D-shaped in section and tapers towards the missing foot. It has a moulded knurled crest extending from the head and tapering towards the lower bow. This crest is defined by raised moulding in the form of rectangular bosses. The crest probably did not extend to the foot, which is missing, as the bosses flatten out towards the end of the broken bow, but it is too corroded to be sure. Most of the tubular wings and the lower part of the bow have corroded away. The backs of the …

Cast copper alloy brooch, circular in plan and flat in section. The edge of the brooch is defined by a ropework border, made up of groups of four raised oblique lines, alternating with plain sections. The interior of the decorated face holds a central bifid arch of foliage, ending in three points, and bordered above by nine circular beads and below by seven. This pattern, with internal foliage and external beading, resembles a 'paisley' print, brought to Scotland from India in the early 19th century. There are more patterns of foliage above the arch, but most of these are obscured by t…

Cast copper alloy Roman dolphin-type brooch with a pair of eyes, one on either side of the head of bow, just below the wings. The recessed area around the protruding pellet would have been enamelled to highlight the effect. There are fragments of decayed red enamel on the bow and wings. The wings are very corroded, but appear to have grooves and recessed shapes, where the enamel survives. Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch, which looks at first to be a composite plate brooch, like an example illustrated in Hattatt (2000) on page 354, Fig.213, No.1128. But the curvature of what remains of the bow, above and below the disc, suggests it is more likely part of a trumpet derivative brooch, such as one illustrated in Hattatt on page 330, Fig.189, No.987, or a fantail brooch, illustrated on page 315, Fig.174, No.315, which are both dated from the 1st to the 2nd century AD. There is evidence that the areas on the disc, between the two raised concentric rings and c…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy hinged Colchester derivative Dolphin type brooch. The pin and hinge of the brooch are missing and so is the catchplate, which would have held the pin in place. The slot for the hinge still remains in the back of the head, between the wings. The ends of both the wings and the lower part of the bow have broken off, and are now worn to smooth, rounded ends.
