Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A four-disc lead cloth seal (the discs are joined by a strip, which has been folded, and the rivet has been pushed through the fourth disc and hammered to hold the seal in place). The second disc is stamped with the two conjoined shields of the Commonwealth, one with St George's cross, the other with the harp of Ireland, and the third disc has a shield having two shearmen's hooks over a teasel plant, with a chevron erminois - the arms of the Clothworkers' Company, who seem to have taken on a role in cloth sealing nationally in the 1650s. The seal dates to the Commonwealth period, 1650…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Incomplete cast copper alloy hooked tag of Read's Class E, Type 5. The object comprises an openwork trefoil body, broken at the lower loop, also resulting in the loss of the hook. There are two pellets at the top, joined by a bar to form the attachment loop of the tag. The moulded relief gives the appearance of ropework to the object, although the whole was cast as one - this is apparent when viewed from the reverse. There are similar examples from early 17th-century contexts in London (Egan 2005) and others illustrated in Read (2008, 110).

Treasure case : 2008 T700
Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel.
While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small copper-alloy mount or stud, in the shape of a bird. The mount is a rough oval in shape, being the shape of an acorn (one way up) with a bent stalk, or (the other way up) a bird with wings folded and a small head with a sharp beak pointing left. If a bird, it resembles that of a crow, raven, magpie or other corvid; but from parallels such as IOW-A780E5 and HESH-851367 it is more likely to represent an acorn.
The decoration is basic, consisting of a crude 'eye' and horizontal lines on the body. The mount is convex in cross-section, hollow at the reverse, with the stumps of tw…

A complete silver thimble of post-medieval date. The surface of the thimble is decorated with a series of regular, circular indentations though those on the top appear less regular.
