Copper alloy and mother-of-pearl brooch. A brooch constructed of three distinct layers: a plain rhomboid back plate; a cast rhomboid openwork plate featuring strands, knops, and curls, probably to convey the impression of floral abundance, and a small [diameter 15.2mm] central mother-of-pearl disc with nicked edges and lightly incised divisions between petals. A central rivet of length 5mm passes through all three layers. A further four rivet positions lie at the points of the rhomboid form, and a curved pin seat occupies one angle. Paired stubs on the opposite side represent a catch …

Copper alloy brooch. A probably die-stamped plate in the form of a flower with three orders of radiating petals in two distinct and conjoined parts, all detail being crisply defined. The outer order comprises juxtaposed buds or leaflets, finely lined, while the inner petals are plainer triangular points. The central order, a small separate plate of diameter 9.3mm, has a fringed edge and a central hollow of diameter 3.3mm in which white metal plating remains, and this may have been displayed through a glass stone inset [now lost]. The rolled sheet metal seat retaining the stub of a dra…

Copper alloy brooch. A costume jewellery brooch comprising two concavo-convex sheet metal crescents linked at the tips of their horns to form a figure-of-eight, with a superimposed round-section solid bar of diameter 3.5mm with flat expanded and forward-facing ends. Around the bar are looped or fitted four cabled rings. Their rope-like appearance is vaguely reminiscent of matters nautical. A rolled metal pin seat is brazed to the hollow interior of one crescent, and the stub of a catch remains at the opposite end. Gilding traces are retained, mainly trapped in the back of the brooch. …

Copper alloy brooch. Cast brooch in the form of a flower, floret or spray with five narrow leaves or buds springing from a stalk; a central round setting of diameter 4mm is now empty. The flat back retains paired lugs for a hinged pin, and the back of the stalk is grooved where a catch plate has been lost. The apparent respect dimensions to whole units of the metric system may suggest manufacture after 1800, and possibly a continental origin for the piece. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1820-1880. Length: 25.7mm, Width: 25.7mm, Thickness: 2mm. Weight: 3.16gms.

Copper alloy and glass brooch. A square gilded copper alloy backplate and four strips of gilt edging, each studded with eleven tiny conical bosses, frame a concavo-convex display face of nine cells defined by twisted gilt copper alloy wire. Two dark spots on the flat back show where pin gear has been lost. The design conceit of what the finder describes as a miniature mosaic appears to be a flower garden. The nine cells form an equal armed cross with large central roundel, with a quarter circle in the angle of each pair of arms. The corner cells are flowerbeds filled by tiny dens…

A complete Post Medieval silver annular brooch. The brooch is made up of a slightly convex silver sheet with striated decoration only around the base of the pin. On the back, maker's mark MC. The diameter is 22.5mm, the thickness is 3.1mm and the weight is 2.91g. Without the mark one might be tempted to think this artefact late medieval, but the form of the mark suggests a 16th Century date or later, though the mark is not recorded in Pickford (ed) of Jackson for this century.
