An incomplete lead Disc Brooch of Early-Medieval (AD 900-1000). The object sub-circular and is missing the lower portion due to old, abraded breaks. The front of the object had a moulded decorative motif composed of an outer border with repeating pellet within a ring motif. There is an inner circular boarder within which is a highly stylised anthropomorphic mask similar in form to a ‘Woden head’. The back of the object retains a partial, integral pin lug between which a shallow casting seam is visible. The catchplate and pin are missing. Length: 15.25mm, Width: 19.06m…

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. A small part of a flat cast disc brooch, perhaps approaching 40mm in its original diameter, with a double lined outer border confining a design including a pellet and an associated petal or loop, possibly part of a more extensive interlace design. The proposed function may be supported by a trapezoid tab on the back, perhaps a relict of fastening gear. Possibly comparable to the East Anglian series of Viking-Age lead brooches. Patinated. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 29.5mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness: 1.6mm, Weight: 7.85gms

Slightly distorted and torn Late Saxon lead alloy disc brooch with an integral pin on the reverse. Relief decoration on the front comprises three concentric rings, the outer of very small pellets, the intermediate of large pellets and the inner of medium sized ones. The central motif is obscure but there is a large pellet at its centre. Very broadly comparable brooches occurred in the 11th-century Cheapside Hoard, some as little as 19mm (¾ inch) in diameter (Weetch 2014, Type 23). At the centres of these, however, glass is inlaid (Catalogue of the Collection of Lo…

Late Saxon lead alloy disc brooch, with cast Borre-style decoration comprising a concave-sided figure with each of the four corners extended to form interlaced, double-strand knots. Kershaw East Anglian Series Type I (Kershaw 2013, 56-61, fig. 3.19). On the reverse the pin fittings comprise an incomplete pin lug set parallel to the edge and a catchplate at a right angle to the edge (an Anglo-Scandinavian arrangement). A common 10th-century type in East Anglia carrying a design based on a Scandinavian prototype, see West 1998, fig. 134.8, Margeson 1997, fig. 28, and Margeson, S. an…

A near complete but warped circular lead brooch. It is only missing its pin. The brooch is circular in plan and would have been flat in cross section although the sheet has been warped giving it an uneven wavey appearance. There are two projections on its reverse which are all that survives of the pin mechanism. This includes a rectangular tab placed c.5mm in from the edge of the brooch that folds over 180 degrees to provide a rest for the pin and two projecting D-shaped tab placed at the opposite end of the brooch. These are each pierced by a hole filled with a lead axis bar. Tr…

An Early Medieval to Medieval lead-alloy brooch dating to circa AD 900-1000. The brooch is disc-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. It has a central circular bosses surrounded by moulded pellets set inside a circumferential border. The reverse is plain. A corroded hinge mechanism and lug to secure the pin are in place at either end. The brooch is consistent with Weetch Type 5: disc-broaches characterised by concentric designs, with the majority of her sample being lead-alloy examples (2013: 78-79). Length: 39mm; Width: 33mm; Thickness: 8mm; Weight: 36.66g.

Copper alloy brooch. Cast concavo-convex sub-rectangular plate with a [now] plain central field bordered by a pelleted line and a series of juxtaposed U-shaped ovulos also outlined by fine pellets. The motifs may indicate an acquaintance with Neo-Classical decorative forms. Opposed U-shaped lugs at the end presumably retained a bar or pin which was perhaps hinged on one of the ends and passed into the other. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: 30.1mm, Width: 13.3mm, Height (i.e. protrusion): 4mm, Thickness: 1.2mm, Weight: 4.23gms

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast plate with three concentric ridges around a flat central boss; the intermediate ring also marks the site of a similarly moulded projection on the back which borders a central hollow. Possibly a disc or plate brooch of Weetch Type 5, which was a cheap Anglo-Scandinavian type. Against this proposed identification, there is no evidence for pin gear. Now in two parts, probably broken at the time of discovery. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 900-1000 Diameter: 30.1mm, Thickness (at ridge): 4.8mm, Weight: 9.46gms

Lead alloy brooch. Cast openwork brooch comprising a cabled loop, rectilinear at one end and separated into narrower plain strands curving upwards at the other. The straight end conceals the tubular seat for a hinged pin [lost]. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting a relatively recent date. The cabled motif might hint at a nautical association. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1850 Length: 29.1mm, Height: 13.2mm, Thickness (clear of pin seat): 3.4mm, Weight: 3.72gms

Lead alloy onion shaped cast object, possibly a terminal knob broken from a Roman crossbow brooch. Circular in plan an onion shaped knob steps down to a collar which again turns down to a broken stub of circular cross-section. It is unlikely that a crossbow brooch made of lead alloy would be strong and opulent enough to have functioned as such. Similar objects to this have been found elsewhere; for example HAMP-0D0AD5, and it is proposed that these could be fragments of pattern moulds used to make the impression in the casting medium when manufacturing the genuine article. A similar c…

Incomplete medieval lead alloy brooch or badge, a disc with a casting seam, integral pin and catchplate on the reverse. On the front a five-pointed star in counter-relief with the end of each point projecting beyond the edge (almost all of one point is missing). At the centre of the star is a circle containing eight or nine pellets (the casting here is poor). The edge between each point is marked by four short radial ribs. This may have been similar to NMS507 of which no image or measurement has survived. Diameter 16.5mm. Thickness, excluding pin, 1.2mm. Mid 14th - early 16th century.

An incomplete early medieval lead alloy disc brooch of Weetch's Type 5, dating to c. AD 900-1000. The brooch is circular in shape and flattened in cross section, with raised moulded decoration in the form of three concentric circles with a pellet at their centre. There is also a sugestion of at least five outer pellets surviving from an outer ring around the perimeter. A fragment of an Early Medieval lead-alloy pseudo-nummular brooch dating to circa AD 875-1050. The extant fragment comprises of a small arc of the edge. The front face has a chip carved border groove near the edge and two recognisable symbols of two wedge shaped arms of a cross and a 'C' shape with an adjoining reverse curve at the top. These two symbols are also chip carved into the face. The reverse is plain but worn and has a slightly convex surface. The design is redolent of SF-234D38 (although this brooch has raised symbols). Consequently, this places it in Weetch's Type 2.A…
