Lead alloy possible brooch. Cast flat ring with a central hole of diameter 15mm with a cut and bent edge suggesting knife-trimming or the removal of a central boss. A pelloidal texture appears on both flat sides, though whether this is a design, the melted relict of a design, or simply heat damage, is uncertain. This object may relate to medieval base metal trinkets, perhaps made in imitation of costume jewellery such as a brooch or annular brooch, made in more precious materials. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300 Diameter: 26.9mm, Thickness: 1.6mm, Weight: 2.48gms

Lead alloy brooch. Cast oval frame of thickness 1.2mm with a series of juxtaposed lugs set in pairs and projecting from a plain border. The lugs bear pelleted detail, and at least some represent flowers. On the back, each pair - there were possibly five in a cinquefoil arrangement - has a low central rib to reinforce it, and a pair of strips of ribbons of width 2.4mm and 2.7mm may have related to fastening of the object. The centre of the brooch is empty. This might have held a stone, or may have been viewed against a coloured backing. This appears typical of cheap jewellery of the 13…

Surrounding the circlet is a series of roundals each with a pellet in the centre, the whole arranged in a circle. On the underside are the remains of catch and bent pin. A fragment of a lead alloy medieval annular brooch, AD. 1300-1500. The fragment is just under half the circumference of the brooch, and has a stepped flange running around the exterior. There are four projecting knops that are hollowed out, one of which is filled with a white paste, possibly an enamel. Between the two central knops is a perforation with a small ring suspended through it, this is likely all that remains of the Brooch pin. There are incised dots between the other knops on the upper surface of the brooch, six dots between each. The rear surface of the brooch is plain and…

An incomplete copper alloy medieval annular brooch. It consists of a simple circular cross-sectioned hoop with four oval knops encircling at regular intervals, each decorated with small incised dots arranged in an irregular patter. The pin is missing. The metal is grey-brown in colour and appears to be pewter like most other parallels of this type. It survives in very fine condition. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 254, nos.1330 & 1333) illustrate two similar examples from excavations in London, one unstratified and one from a late 14th century context, suggesting a similar date for this…
