A very finely worked gold brooch of hollow construction, the brooch takes the form of a six-petalled flower. The obverse is engraved with a black letter inscription which reads 'EN BONE TEMPS' ('in good time'). The inscription is punctuated with foliate scrolls and would originally have contained enamel which is now lost. Fragment of gold sheet with garnet and opaque blue glass in cloisonné cellwork, part of an applied central setting from a silver plated disc brooch. Gold setting from the centre of a plated disc brooch or composite brooch. The setting, which is heavily worn and damaged, consists of a crumpled set of cell walls, within a circular frame. The frame is encircled by a collar made up of two strands of beaded filigree wire flanking a flattened Z-twisted beaded filigree rope. The brooch is miniature in type and is decorated with a series of engraved chevrons which may once have been nielloed. Niello is a black inlay composed of sulphides of silver and copper which was used in the Middle Ages to distinguish incised decoration on silver and gold.

A medieval brooch formed in a ring with two collets measuring about 9mm high; one is set with a garnet and the other with a sapphire. From these collets springs a foliate tendril which creates an openwork appearance, being attached to the main body of the brooch at the loop and point of the pin. Where the point of the pin meets the hoop of the brooch there is a small lozenge engraved with a cross.

A gold brooch formed into the shape of an asymmetric heart. Such brooches were used as love tokens during this period and some surviving examples carry inscriptions of amatory intent. This brooch lacks any inscription. A 14th century, asymmetric heart brooch, richly enamelled with flowers, can be found in the British Museum (Af 2701). For a simpler and closer comparison in silver, recently acquired by the British Museum, see Treasure Annual Report 2000, no.140 (Weeting-with-Broomhill, Norfolk).

Roman gold and silver oval brooch, 21mm long, 19mm wide and weighing 6.37grams. The brooch consists of an oval plate which is coated in silver on the reverse. The upper surface is decorated with three concentric ovals of gold ropework. The outer one is wider and higher than the inner two. These have incised lines running at oblique angles in differing directions, which gives the effect of a herringbone pattern. Setting from an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. The setting appears to consist of a dome of white material, with a band of gold ropework running around its diameter. Four strips of gold ropework run from this band up towards the centre of the dome, which has a circular setting of similar ropework, which may have formed a setting for a gem stone (now missing). This object has been identified from a photograph only, but clearly represents a central setting of Avent's Class 4 (Avent 1975). Fragment from an early medieval gold brooch or mount. Rectangular fragment of very fine sheet gold with a filigree border and decoration (from one end to another) of a filigree S-scroll, a now empty raised circular cell, two filigree annulets, then a raised rectangular cell containing what appears to be possibly degraded blue enamel (now mostly opaque white). The reverse is undecorated, although the impression of the cells and filigree can be seen. Length 17.90mm, width 9.30mm, overall thickness 2.70mm, thickness of sheet 0.18mm, weight 0.79g.

TREASURE CASE 2005 T126 A medieval gold annular brooch, of lozenge-shaped section. The brooch has engraved zigzag decoration on the two outer surfaces, and a constriction and a notch for the pin, which is now missing. Diameter: 13.5 mm. The ring dates to the 13th century. The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

Very fine medieval gold annular brooch dating from the 15th century. The brooch is hollow cast and is hemispherical in section. Part of the frame is made up of a pair of very finely cast three-dimensional clasped hands, the right hand faces the front and is positioned over the left. There is a raised band immediately below the knuckles suggesting the end of a sleeve. The left hand, facing the back of the brooch, has the same band but is less pronounced probably due to wear. A miniature medieval brooch, roughly oval in shape, and terminating in two joined hands. The brooch has two facets which carry an enigmatic inscription, punctuated by flowers and colons. Reading clockwise from the pin, the letters are On the inner band N V I V N: I I M I N I On the outer band: V I I I T I: I: I - I I V L V I (?)I The meaning of this is unclear, but may have magical or amuletic significance. The two hands may once have held a pearl, which is customary for brooches of this type. The brooch is gold, and dates from the thirteenth century.

Treasure Report: 2005/T8 Parish/County: Rowington, Warwickshire A medieval brooch of trefoil shape. Each part of the trefoil was originally enamelled. The enamel survives in two of the foils and is coloured blue and white. The third area has lost its enamel, which may have been of a different colour less well preserved in the ground.
