The smaller figure is possibly wearing a head scarf and this is also visible on the reverse of the brooch as a length of fabric continuing down the back of the figure. Each figure has an obliquely angled stand or frame which has a moulded collar and knop on the upper termi…

A complete medieval annular brooch of miniature size in the form of a ring, made from a single strip of silver. Curved projections at the top of the pin give it the appearance of a miniature sword. The pin is square in section, and each facet is incised with wavering zig-zag lines. The curved projections have punched decoration. Iron corrosion adheres to the top of the pin. Several other examples of brooches with sword-shaped pins have been found, including TAR 2005/6 No 332 (2006 T429), YORYM - 96C42D, LVPL - 3F8372 and NMS 8BB61E. In cross-section the frame is a slener trapezoid with the longest edge former the outer face of the frame. The corners on the reverse of the frame are rounded. One terminal of the frame is broken, and the break is possibly recent. The opposite terminal has a narrowed protrusion, which is an angular oval in cross-section, and again it is possibly a recent break. This narrowed protrusion was originally the bar around which the pin was positioned. On the ou…
