An enamelled copper alloy plate brooch. It is circular, a raised border on the outer circumference and approximately halfway along the diameter forms a section, inside which cells for enamel are formed by alternate high and low sections. On the raised parts there are traces of a blue enamel. The central section of the brooch would have been divided into six triangular sections, like wheel spokes, which would have also have been enamelled. Three of these remain. In the centre is a raised boss which would have been a prominent feature, but is now missing. The reverse is fl…

Possible silver, oval shaped fastener from the Victorian or early twentieth century AD, c. 1850-1950. The decoration is eclectic with many faceted shapes making the overall design. The pin mechanism does not survive but the mounting points for this can be seen on the rear of the brooch. It is in clean condition, complete except for the pin. It measures 41mm long by 21mm wide, and weighs 5.23g. In spite of the brooch being made of silver, it is less than 300 years old and therefore does not qualify as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996 Finders reference: 1872

An incomplete copper alloy brooch, Dragonesque style as Mackreth 2011, DRAG  3.a4. Plate 129, probably the latter as enamel is still present in the cells. The head of the beast is missing although the attachment for the 'nostril' is still visible on the body. A central line and borders define four central rectangular cells flanked by two sub-triangular cells to either side; the central squares have opposite cells with blue and yellow enamel, and white in the other two, while the sub-triangular cells have blue with yellow opposing. Roman copper-alloy Headstud brooch, dating to c. AD 75 - 200. The brooch has a rectangular head which encases a tubular hinge mechanism. The top of a copper-alloy pin is still attached to the axis bar. A rectangular-sectioned bow curves downwards from the head, terminating in a flat, circular foot that angles upwards at the front. Just below the head on the front face sits a flat, circular decorative knob. The bow is further decorated by a three ridges that run down the length of the front face. Further vertical ridges decorate the wings of the head of the brooch. A sub-triangular cat…

Silver decorative boss from an annular brooch of medieval date (c. AD 1200 - 1400). The boss is flat and lozenge-shaped with a design etched onto the front face. This consists of a concentric lozenge divided into four smaller lozenges; the design on the smaller lozenges alternates between a cross and a central dot. The back of the boss displays a curved groove running across its width; this is where the component was once soldered onto the brooch. There are a number of examples of medieval annular brooches that have decorative lozenge-shaped bosses soldered onto them and a number o…

Copper-alloy head fragment from a Roman bow brooch, possibly a Langton Down or Thistle type (c. 25 - 75 AD). The object has a cylindrical head which encases an axis bar for a hinge mechanism. The pin is now missing but seems to have extended from the back of the head. A wide, flat bow extends from the bottom of the head; this terminates in a distorted, jagged broken edge. The surface of the object is worn and covered in green copper-corrosion, yet the remains of a linear decorative ridge running down the front of the bow can just be made out. A shiny patch on the head indicates that t…

An almost complete copper alloy umbonate brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 100 - AD 250). The brooch is circular with four projections extending from quarter points around the circumference; one of which houses the pin mechanism and the opposite one, the catchplate. The main body of the brooch is domed and decorated with an outer recessed border. Within this border, there are two concentric rings of triangular cells pointing towards a central dot motif. All of the cells in the outer ring were filled possibly with enamel, whereas the cells within the inner ring are still filled wit…

A copper alloy Roman knee brooch dating from AD150 - 250. Only the body with head and food remain. The spring coils, pin and axis bar are missing - having been made from iron the axis bar most probably corroded away thus resulting in the brooch also losing the spring and pin. The plain rectangular (with rounded corners) plate head conceals one lateral pierced lug which would have held the iron axis bar and the copper alloy spring coils. The bow is curved almost at a right angle and of kite-shaped in plan, rectangular in cross-section. The top of the bow has four moulded cells of trian…

An incomplete Roman enamelled, copper alloy, umbonate brooch of c. AD100-AD 250. The front of the brooch, which is broadly circular in shape, has a central boss. Radiating out from this are 12 triangular cells with traces of alternating blue and yellow enamel. There is a suspension loop surviving and traces of at least 4 decorative lugs around the rim. It is possible that there would originally have been 7 of these in total (see Mackreth 2011, 165, 6e, Plate 109, No. 11166) The back of the brooch is plain and undecorated. It is concave. The catch plate and pin are missing, b…
