Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Aesica type and of 1st century AD date The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and is corroded (with a length of 40.1mm, a surviving depth of 16.6mm and a weight of 16.0g). The brooch is of closed form and is cast in one piece but employing a separate spring mechanism, with the missing axis bar secured through a central lug behind the head (21.2mm wide). The chord was tensioned by a notch cut through a rib at the head. Either side of the damaged central lug on the rear are grooves to accept the missing spring. The arched bow (24.9mm long) has d…

Head and upper bow of a copper-alloy Roman Headstud brooch, probably from the 2nd century AD. The brooch employed a spring mechanism, but the spring is now missing. Near the top of the bow is a roughly circular perforation through the bow. This hole is unlikely to have been a setting for a missing stone, and may suggest the brooch is a two piece Headstud brooch, now missing the head-stud. Very little of the original surface survives. There is a suggestion of vertical mouldings on the arms, either side of the bow. There is no surviving evidence for mouldings on the bow or a chord on the…

Cast copper alloy two-piece bow brooch. The chord, pin, lower half of the bow and catch-plate are missing. The brooch contains a bilateral spring held by a copper ally axis bar through a cast lug on the back of the trumpet head with the chord below and free, just pressing against the back of the head of the brooch (cf. Type G Hattat 1982, 49, table 2). The upper part of the lug does not extend above the back of the head. The decoration on the middle of the bow is not of the usual "acanthus" form, but instead consists of a wide notch. Other decoration on the brooch consists of curvilin…
