Copper alloy and iron brooch fragment. Cast openwork brooch in the form of a frond with triple discs representing two florets and with leaves above; a catch remains at one end of a crumpled object. Copper alloy brooch. Pressed metal annular frame with four cabled and symmetrically distributed loops, each springing from a cabled band on the loop. The object appears to represent a life-saving ring. A pin seat and curled catch are brazed to the back. The introduction of flotation aids for fishermen was documented by photography in 19th-century Whitby, so a recent date may be inferred, and a possible seaside, maritime or humanitarian interest might be invoked. Bent. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1875-1925 Diameter: 25.4mm, Band Width: 4.8mm, Band Thickness: 1.1mm, Weight:…

A post-medieval silver annular brooch dating to c.1600-1700. The brooch consists of a circular frame, that has a flat rectangular cross-section set at an oblique angle. A circular hole mounts the silver pin that has a curved penannular loop for attachment.  Similar Post-Medieval examples have been reported at treasure HAMP-974996 (2017 T530) and KENT-589DC5 (2018 T579).  These brooches can have a date range from 1500-1700. An example recorded at GLO-E7A921 (2020 T374) benefited from a makers mark enabling more accurate dating to the 17th century. Conclusion: In terms of ag…

An incomplete copper alloy brooch dating to the Post Medieval period c. AD 1800-1900. The brooch is only missing copper alloy pin. The brooch is primarily made of single length of drawn wire of diameter 2.3mm which is bent into four loops to represent a lover's knot. An incomplete copper-alloy object in the classical style, probably a brooch. It is similar in shape to an insignia of a Roman standard and possibly dates to the 18th or 19th century, when imitations of classical styles were popular. The brooch has evidence of damage at the top, where it was attached to something above it. The front of the brooch is decorated. The reverse is undecorated and plain, apart from a narrow rectangular ridge that runs down the centre of the object from the damaged top, gradually tapering to a cylindrical tip at the base.  The front of…

Copper alloy and glass brooch. Cast copper alloy discoid backplate with eight projecting triangular spurs which clasp a low plano-convex section opaque glass stone with trails of off-white and pale and dark brown glass. The function is suggested by opposed scars on the back, taken to represent a pin seat and catch position. A loop of diameter 10.5mm made of drawn wire of thickness 1.4mm is attached to the edge of the back, clear of the putative pin gear, and might represent its replacement. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850 Diameter: 21.9mm, Thickness (clear of pin gear): 4.6mm…
