Copper alloy brooch fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast plate, probably of octagonal form with rounded corners, with a central circular or oval frame in low relief, possibly resembling a floral wreath. A border around this bears a series of angled ruled incised lines radiating from the frame. A central panel is featureless, and may have retained an image or keepsake. A small lug on the back presumably relates to pin gear, otherwise lost. This was probably made in a craft tradition rather than an industrial setting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: …

Copper alloy and glass brooch. A square gilded copper alloy backplate and four strips of gilt edging, each studded with eleven tiny conical bosses, frame a concavo-convex display face of nine cells defined by twisted gilt copper alloy wire. Two dark spots on the flat back show where pin gear has been lost. The design conceit of what the finder describes as a miniature mosaic appears to be a flower garden. The nine cells form an equal armed cross with large central roundel, with a quarter circle in the angle of each pair of arms. The corner cells are flowerbeds filled by tiny dens…

A copper alloy brooch in the shape of two entwined serpents. The object is green in colour and there is active corrosion in several places. The brooch is oval in shape and is formed by two coils of thick wire which are intermeshed. The wires are 2.82mm in diameter and circular in section however, on the front of the brooch, the terminals form flattened tear drop shapes representing the stylised heads of the serpents, while on the back the terminals are butt ended. On the front of the brooch there is raised decoration visible along the wires which may represent scales, and on one coil …

Silver possible Brooch fragment. Beaten silver sheet fragment of thickness 0.3mm with a border of a finely rendered cable pattern set in a gully between ridges, and with elements of three of a series of drawn wire quatrefoils within this border. A plain segment masks the junction of two differently aligned elements of the border, suggesting that this, like the internal design, may be applied to the sheet. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 17.2mm, Width: 6.2mm, Thickness (overall): 1.0mm, Weight: 0.37gms.

Copper alloy and glass brooch fragment. Pressed metal openwork plate with strap loop brazed to one side and an oval glass (originally) plano-convex facetted stone of black glass, length 12.8mm. The plate and the stone were found separately though close to each other, and the finder infers - credibly - they may be from the same object. The metal plate is tinned on the front and painted glossy black on the back. This object probably follows the fashion for jet mourning jewellery established by Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1865-1…

Copper alloy brooch. Cast circular brooch of hollow composite construction, comprising a flat back plate with twelve equidistantly spaced pointed knops and retaining the stub of the mounting for a hinged pin, and a pressed metal front. The front bears, described from the outside: a billeted or indented border, a pelleted ring, and a central boss with sloping sides and a flat top to which one or two further layers of sheet metal were formerly attached. The back plate is patinated or decayed making it appear older than the pressed metal construction of the front would suggest. Suggested…

Copper alloy brooch. Cast concavo-convex brooch in the form of a reclining Chinaman with a long divided beard or moustache, with one hand resting on his knee. He wears a hat resembling a hussar's colpack with hanging bag to one side; a loose fitting tunic decorated with a repeated hexagonal motif, and baggy trousers. A pair of indeterminate features lie beyond his foot - possibly these include the other foot, while his elbow rests on a recumbent antlered deer. Copper alloy brooch. Sheet metal plate in the form of a spade from a pack of cards, with a drawn wire four coil spring and pin with hooked end brazed to the back. The spring is set at the top of the plate; the stalk of the Spade is perforated and now ragged, probably from loss of a catch plate. This would appear to have been made in a craft rather than an industrial setting, probably as a 'one off' item of personalised trinket jewellery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Copper alloy brooch with white metal plating. Hollow pressed metal brooch, probably of separate halves joined, with remains of a hinged pin seat and catch plate on the back. The front bears a relief depiction of a water mill with working wheel in a forested setting. The back retains white metal plating. Now bent. The subject was especially favoured by artists of the 19th-century Romantic movement, though the pressed metal construction tends to argue a slightly later date. Fragment of a brooch of uncertain date. The object is reminiscent of a Roman brooch, however the metal has a red-brown patina more associated with the Post Medieval period. The fragment is an inverted 'T' shape in plan with a vertical bar with a rounded expansion towards a lateral bar. The lateral bar is expanded in thickness at the junction between vertical and lateral bars. The lateral bar tapers at the ends to rectangular knops, thinner and narrower than the central part of the bar.
