Post-medieval silver annular brooch, circular, but now distorted to an oval, 28 x 16mm. Original diameter c. 24mm. The 5.5mm-wide hoop, probably stamped out of a larger sheet, is bevelled or angled and pierced by a circular hole for the pin. Both edges are sharp, the outer slightly thickened, the inner with a ridge around on the front and hollowed on the reverse. The pin is of sub-triangular section and appears to have made from drawn wire, the tip cut to a point. Weighing 2.20g. Similar to 2002T40, this brooch was originally dated to the 14th century, but subsequent discoveries …

Description: Post medieval annular brooch. The frame is almost circular, and convex on the front, concave on the reverse, to produce a C-shaped cross-section. It has a slight ridge running around the external edge on the front. The frame has been pierced with an oval pin hole to house the silver pin which remains in situ. A small break in the frame at the rear of the perforation for the pin has been repaired by the finder with a small blob of silver. On the reverse of the frame, opposite the perforation for the pin, is the stamped Roman initial D, presumably a maker's mark. Dimens…

An exceptional post-medieval elaborate copper alloy brooch, gilded, with small patches of silvering showing, apparently from under the gilding. The trefoil back-plate has two rounded and one pointed foil, separated by a small rounded foil on each side, and with a trapezoidal 'stem' between the two rounded foils. The openwork front-plate consists of spiralling tendrils and multiple pellets of different sizes, with six collets, five of which are now only partially filled with a decayed white material, the sixth empty. Less than half of the frame of a silver sheet annular brooch or buckle, badly distorted and broken at both ends. One break cuts across a maker's mark ]WE The reading of the first letter is uncertain. Silver annular brooch, circular, but now distorted to an oval, diameter 29mm. Hoop of 6mm wide sheet, bevelled or angled, pierced by a circular hole for a D-section pin. Probably stamped out of a larger sheet. Both edges are sharp, the outer followed by a slight flange, the inner by a rib which is hollow on the reverse. Weighs 1.88g. This was originally dated to the 14th century, which is the date given in the Treasure Annual Report for 2002 (80, no. 78). Silver annular brooch. The frame is oval, 20 x 16.5mm (perhaps distorted), and angled; it is thickened on the underside, either side of the pin constriction, with slight transverse ridges flanking the pin constriction on the front. Flattened D-sectioned pin. Published in TAR 2000, no. 122, without illustration, and with a 13th-century date. The description, with its transverse ridges flanking a pin construction, sounds however more like a post-medieval annular brooch of the kind which often have makers' marks; compare GLO-E7A921, KENT-589DC5 etc. The date-range has accordingly be…
