An incomplete copper-alloy cruciform brooch with 'florid' Style I decoration of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 500 - 570. The fragment is an expanded flat knob which would have projected from the head of the brooch. The central element of the knob is rectangular with a D-shaped section. One edge bears four parallel ridge and groove designs and two parallel punched annular designs are present towards the opposite edge, giving the appearance of eyes. A short rectangular projection with D-shaped section extends from the edge with the grooves, terminating in a worn break. This would have…

Fragment of gilded copper-alloy object, probably a jewelled disc brooch, reconstructable to a minimum of 43mm diameter. The fragment is lunate or crescent-shaped, and represents just under half of the brooch. It has worn breaks along all edges, and all of the curved outer edge has been lost, but the shape is preserved. The front is decorated with low-relief ornament, with gilding remaining in the grooves. The outermost field is very incomplete but contains some probably zoomorphic decoration, with traces of bodies which may have been made from a pair of border lines filled in with …

An incomplete copper-alloy ansate brooch of early-medieval date, c.AD 700-750. The head of the brooch comprises an unevenly armed cross, one arm of which extends to form the start of an arched bow. Only a short length of the rectangular bow survives, the rest having been lost to old worn breaks. The arm opposite the bow is narrower and has a rounded terminal. The remaining arms are also rounded, narrow and short. The three surviving arms are decorated with ring-and-dot designs at the terminals joined by linear grooves. To the reverse of the brooch, an integral hook or loop remains …

TREASURE CASE : 2016 T101 A small fragment of an unidentified gilded silver artefact. The fragment is rectangular in both plan and section, and appears to have one true and three broken or cut edges. The upper surface of the fragment is decorated with a cast zoomorphic design in Salin's Style I. This appears to depict the head of a bird-of-prey in profile, facing left (as pictured), characterised by a bulbous eye with a curved beak below. The remains of a similar bird's head may be represented on the left, facing the surviving bird, but this cannot be confirmed due to incomple…

A complete copper alloy brooch of early Early-Medieval date. The brooch is annular with a narrow D-shaped section which flattens at opposing points on the frame to form integral decorative conjoined zoomorphic heads. One pair is in the form of open-mouthed beasts with ring-and-dot motifs representing eyes. A narrowed bar joins both beast's mouths and acts as a constriction for the pin. The opposite portion of the frame is in the form of birds' heads with long curved beaks delineated by incised lines. The eyes are also marked with ring and dot designs. The brooch, which is broken in two unequal halves, is circular and gilded on the front and tinned on the back to give the appearance of a silver base; diameter: 50 mm. In the centre is a large, empty, circular cell, which would originally have held a boss of white material (possibly shell or cuttlefish) with a central garnet. A complete cast copper alloy penannular brooch of Early Medieval date. The brooch has a circular cross section and lozenge shaped terminals each of which has a flat top and base. The body of the brooch appears to be decorated with transverse incised grooves though the terminals appear undecorated, this may however be a result of wear on these features. Penannular brooches have been categorised by Elizabeth Fowler (1960) and this example fits into her Type G having squared or faceted terminals. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 21.2mm in diameter, 3…

Copper alloy penannular brooch of Dickinson's Group G1.7 (Dickinson 1982, 49, Fig. 4. The ring is round sectioned and undecorated with two flattened, lozenge shaped terminals each of which bears an incised ring on one face. The pin is made from a strip of sheet metal, one end of which is wrapped around the ring. It is hog-backed, pushed down into the brooch's ring. There is a slight waist at the point where the pin crosses the ring; this emphasises the end of the pin but could be a result of wear at this point of contact. Outside diameter, 32mm; Ring Section, 4mm diameter; Pin Length,…

Terminal from a copper-alloy penannular brooch of early-medieval date and Irish origin. A short length of the curved frame survives, with a D-shaped cross-section, and there is a thickening where this joins the terminal. The terminal is sub-triangular and decorated with a shallow cast relief design. The fragment is corroded so that it is hard to see the details of the design, but it appears to be formed around a sunken lozenge shape within an oval frame with D-shaped cells around the edge of this frame, two above and one below. The edges appear either wavy or incomplete; all edges …

The surviving knob is half-round with a flat-topped basal moulding decorated with two fine grooves, and a further fine groove at the base of the rounded terminal. The moulding and terminal are divided by a broad groove. The metal has a mid reddis…

A cast copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 5th or 6th century (c. 450-550 AD). The brooch has a flat head plate, with three semi-circular lobed extensions. These extensions are undecorated and although the brooch is badly corroded and some of the surface has been lost, what remains has a smooth, shiny patina. The brooch is broken at the beginnings of the arch of the bow, the break is worn. The break has resulted in the loss of the bow and foot. On the reverse of the head there is a small, broken central pierced loop. There is corrosion around the loop. Similar to an example…
