An incomplete gilded silver brooch or mount dating to the late fifth to early sixth centuries. Less than 25% of the artefact survives. It has a curving edge and is decorated with Salin's Style I ornament on the front, comprising a human mask beside a spiral. Beneath this is a row of beading. The reverse is plain.
The artefact was tested using a Mistral tabletop XRF machine to determine its elemental composition. The results are as follows:

An incomplete copper alloy penannular brooch of type G3 and early-medieval date. Approximately 50% of the brooch is present, with one surviving terminal. The pin is missing. The surviving terminal consists of a flattened expanded terminal, decorated by a series of ridges. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The brooch is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Early-medieval one-piece circular or cross-shaped brooch consisting of a circular plate with a rectangular projection at the top which curls backwards and under to form an integral wire spring. The plate has two angled, oval perforations in the upper part and two corresponding curved edges within the incomplete lower portion of the plate, giving a cross-shaped effect. An incomplete cast copper-alloy lozenge-shaped strip brooch with remains of gilding and iron corrosion on the back, dating to the late 8th/ early 9th century AD (length: 90.7mm; width: 66mm; thickness of plate: 1.6mm; weight: 30.23g). At the top of this flat plate brooch, there is a large slightly extending area of iron corrosion, where the iron spring was situated. The slightly uneven-sided lozenge plate has a plain border around the outside, with an outer ridge separating the border from the finely detailed chip-carved design.

Approx. half of the brooch remains. Decoration consists of zigzag incised lines with notches around the outside edge. The brooch has a slight convex curvature.
Helen Geake writes: This sounds like an early Anglo-Saxon flat annular brooch, although in the absence of an image it is impossible to be certain. Accordingly, the original date range quoted (410-1066 AD) has been changed to 450-600 AD.
