Description: An incomplete gilt copper-alloy Brooch of Early-Medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) date (AD 750-850). The object is a disc brooch of Weetch type 12. The object is sub ovate due to breaks which have resulting in the loss of the majority of the outer edges and portions of the inner plate. The upper surface is extensively decorated in chip carving within two cells flanking a raised expanding linear ridge.  This formed one arm of a dividing cross, a device often seen on these brooches. The object retains two large, silver, globular-headed rivets, one in the centre…

The foot has two projecting circular lobes on either side, the upper ones decorated with three large dots or blind-drilled holes and the lower ones decorated with a single similar dot. The centre of the footplate also has similar dots, possibly originally with rings around them to form ring-and-dot motifs; there are three, widely spaced in a line down the centre of the footplate. The foot then t…

A cast copper alloy mount in a trilobe shape featuring an elaborate Borre style knot motif on each arm, and a interlace triangular know in the centre. The surface has been gilded, with traces of gilding on the face and reverse. The reverse is plain with no obviouls evidence of a fixing for a pin, although two small bumps on the reverse of one arm could possibly be a scar from a lug to hold a pin, although these are obscured by some uneven corrosion and by no means definitive. There are two incomplete loops at two of the inwardly curving sides, and a scar at the third. The patina of th…

The incomplete head of a cast copper-alloy early Anglo Saxon small-long brooch. The head is rectangular in shape, with three flat T-shaped 'knobs', one on the top (partly missing) and one to either side (one complete, one largely missing). These 'knobs' are derived from those found on cruciform brooches, and have rounded corners. The waists joining them to the centre of the headplate are formed from pairs of U-shaped cut-outs. Fragment of a bow brooch, heavily cast in low-grade silver alloy. Curved bow fragment decorated with arches set inside rectangular frames. Most of the object has broken away, but there are remains of a plate at one end of the bow. The back is plain except for a triangular tab where the bow meets the still preserved plate fragment. and a large, transverse crack. 5th century. Treasure report from Dr. Sonja Marzinzik: The rectangular, partly damaged frame of the bow suggests that this was part of a wide equal-armed brooch. This is further supported by the similarity of the arch …

Fragment for the foot of what is likely to have been a Great Square Headed Brooch. The face in decorated in Anglo-Saxon Style I, the details of which are partly obscured by corrosion. In the centre of the fragment is a shield-shaped panel. This is difficult to parallel but is probably based on the triangular panel seen on other brooches. On the back is a narrow, tapering rib which represents the end of the catch-plate. 40mm long, 32mm wide and 8mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a brown patina and weighs 11.80 grams.

An early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch made from copper alloy, missing the lower part of the foot. The headplate is basically rectangular, with a shallow U-shaped nick towards the top of each side edges, and similar nicks on the lower edge, one to either side of the bow. The outline of these nicks may be partly obscured by corrosion, as although they are visible on both faces of the headplate (front and reverse) they do not appear to be complete cut-outs affecting the outline of the headplate. The headplate is decorated with incised lines running top to bottom, perhaps intended t…

The projecting lobes have sunken terminals, presumably originally inlaid with enamel or glass. The body of the brooch consists of a flat baseplate and raised central collar, the latter describing the edge of the ornamented central area. Sitting on top of the coll…
