An incomplete middle early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) lozengiform strip brooch of c. 8th-century date (Weetch Type 31.C). The brooch is of one-piece construction and has been broken at the opposing narrow apexes, respectively where the sprung wire pin would have continued, and the catch-plate would have been located. The front of the brooch has a tooled ('chip-carved') Greek key design consisting of four separate lozenge-shaped elements with coiled decoration arranged symmetrically, thus creating a cross in saltire between them. Traces of gilding are visible in the recesses of the design,…

Early-Medieval copper-alloy strip brooch, length 40mm, width 23mm, thickness 1mm, weight 4.28g. The brooch consists of an undecorated flat lozenge-shaped plate. The integral spring emerges from the top corner of the brooch and coils once before straightening to form the pin; the rest of the pin is now missing. At the opposite corner is a small protruding rod that is bent back on itself and would have acted as a catchplate.
Geake (2001, 23-24) notes that recent examples from North Lincolnshire and Sedgeford (Norfolk) have confirmed a Middle Saxon date for this type of brooch, with t…

Cast copper alloy detachable side knob from a florid cruciform brooch. Length 22mm, width 31mm, thickness 5mm. The knob is mushroom-shaped and highly decorated, in the form of a face mask with large round eyes in the centre; there is a rectangular projection above this which would have been attached to the head plate of the brooch. On the reverse of this rectangular projection are two small copper-alloy rivets. These are also just visible from the front of the brooch and so it seems likely that they are separately made, perhaps representing a modification.
The mask is flanked by …

The item is a flat copper alloy fragment which is possibly a fragment of a circle. On the upper face of the fragment there is a small sub-rectangular indentation. In this area on the reverse there is a small lug protruding at right-angles to the reverse face. The lug has a small indentation along its edge. This maybe the remains of a hole in the lug. Around this possible hole is traces of iron corrosion. The iron could be the remains of an iron pin.
