Two fragments of a cast copper alloy early-medieval brooch, either a cruciform or a small-long brooch probably dating from AD 420 - 550. They are probably from the same brooch.
One piece is the corroded head of the brooch with the top part of the bow. The head is an incomplete plate with a rounded upper edge. The headplate appears sub-circular in shape although it is likley that it would have been rectangular with knops on either side. There is a flat facet at the top of the bow which is D shaped in cross-section. The back of the headplate is very corro…

Within an outer frame is a classical looking male bust, but the surface is too worn to identify any further details. The back of the brooch is flat. At the top it has two clear projections (pin lugs) from a pin mounting. At the bottom there is at least one projection, probably the remains of the catch-plate. However, there is also a possible scar from a second projection which is now missing sp…

Within the terminal, it is divided into a triangular centre field with separate edge fields. The material is copper-alloy, with signs of white-metal coating on the front as well as the back. The style suggests an origin in Ireland, but the material could indicate a local variation of the Irish style.
