Fragment of a copper alloy penannular brooch, Booth Type G1 (Fowler type G) of early early-medieval date, c. AD 450-650. The brooch is missing the pin, one terminal and some of hoop with approximately 50% remaining. The hoop survives as a curved segment ending in a break. The break is worn and similarly patinated suggesting damage in antiquity. The hoop has a moulded rib decoration across the front, but which does not continue all the way around. The hoop is circular in section. The one remaining terminal is an irregularly cast cuboid with the removal of the corners creating a polyhedr…

An incomplete cast copper alloy cruciform brooch of Early-Medieval date. The fragment is probably part of a small long brooch with a square head plate which is decorated with two rows of incised dots along the vertical edges. From three sides of the head plate sub-triangular knopped projections extend each of which is very worn. From the forth edge the steeply curved bow extends and is D-shaped in section. On the reverse of the head plate a centrally positioned lug projects through which the pin would have been hinged. The pin no longer remains and iron corrosion coats much of the rev…

A copper-alloy plate brooch in the form of an equal-armed cross with bifid terminals. The centre of the cross is lozenge-shaped and has a raised centre surrounded by two grooved borders. One arm of the brooch is missing. On the reverse are two copper-alloy lugs, both broken, one with a circular hole in which is iron corrosion, probably the remains of the pin. The metal has a smooth green patina where it is not damaged. Although there are superficial similarities to various cross-shaped middle and later Anglo-Saxon brooches (e.g. SF-C42F44), the closest parallels are to be found am…

A curved piece of cast copper alloy, rectangular in cross-section, coming from an Early-Medieval annular or penannular brooch. Only a small fragment of a circular frame survives, and only one face is decorated. The decoration is in a recessed sub-rectangular panel, and consists of two Insular creatures, executed in pseudo filigree, forming a simple knot, biting each other's bodies. They have detailed heads, with two pellet like eyes and wide nostrils, transverse lines on the bodies and a wide (fish like?) tail, but no legs. Traces of gilding survive in the panel. The edge of another r…

Headplate and bow from an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch made from copper alloy. A top knob survives but the side knobs are both missing. The pin is missing but traces of iron oxide survive. From the image, the brooch appears to have a trapezoidal raised central panel, decorated down either edge with double-crescent punchmarks, and two slightly flared wings. The bow begins with a flat-section panel, perhaps decorated with a horizontal line, and then is facetted below. A double vertical groove can be seen at the top of the facetted part, but below it is worn smooth. This b…
