The artefact comprises the foot and bow of the brooch. The artefact is broken just above the bow, the bow is concave and lowers to an expanded, decorated foot. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated, but the obverse of the foot features a border of irregularly incised dots around four roughly incised crosses divided by a larger central cross. An Early Medieval copper alloy annular brooch. It is missing the pin but otherwise complete. The frame (37mm diameter) has a flattened D-shaped cross-section (3mm thick), with traces of radial lines visible in places on the curved surface. This band broadens into animal heads, facing each other, with open mouths joined by a narrowed bar. The heads have clearly delineated mouths, but are too worn for any trace of other features to be visible. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
This brooch is similar to YORYM-507065, but with only two animal heads. The Style II animal heads and r…

A fragment of copper alloy cruciform brooch dating to the early early-medieval period, c. AD 450-550.
The head and most of the bow of the brooch are missing with the base of the bow present, curving to meet the foot plate. There are a series of horizontal bands and raised collars across the upper part of the foot of the brooch before it terminates in an animal head terminal. This animal head has two raised pellets which represent the eyes. Below the eyes are comma-shaped nostrils, flat undecorated circles with small oblique extensions running upward and outward. Below is a flat sub…

What remains of the brooch are the bow, with part of the central plate of the head and a lower panel attached to the bow. The central plate is undecorated, with broken edges leaving it in a sub-triangular shape in plan. The underside of the central plate retains a copper-ally lug cast integral with the head and two complete coils of an iron spring-pin corroded in place. The bow has a rectangular panel at each end, each with two inscribed lines running parallel across its width nea…

A cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 500-600.
The brooch is incomplete, with only the head and the bow remaining, the head itself also incomplete. The bow is carinated with notched, projecting corners where it joins the head. The bow joins the central panel of the head, with may have stamped ring-and-dot or triangular decoration along its edges, though corrosion obscured the detail. To either side of the central panel are the remains of a wing, though only the base of the wing remains, extending no more than 3mm…

A copper-alloy fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, dating c. 450-600.
Only a segment of the foot remains, from the base of the bow to the portion just above the terminal. At the base of the bow is a band across the width of the brooch, creating a step to the brooch. Below this is a rectangular panel that is undecorated except for a simple band across the width of the panel in its centre in low relief. The panel then yields to a series of moulded collars in high relief: first a double collar, followed by a triple collar, and probably another double collar but this is …

The headplate has a trapezoidal panel, tapering only slightly from the base of the bow to the outer head of the panel, with five stamped crescents visible along the undamaged edge of the panel. The base of one wing remain, with a complete break where the wing and panel meet on the opposite side. The top of the panel has a cast-integral conical knob with a collar, all half-round in section. A bow and portion of the headplate of an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, c. 475-600.
The bow is carinated with notched corners, tapering slightly from head to foot. The bow has broken from the foot just above the notched corners. A sub-triangular-shaped portion of the headplate remains attached to the upper bow, and there may be evidence of stepping at the base of the headplate where it joins the bow, suggesting wings. On the reverse of the headplate is a single lug of sub-triangular shape. Corrosion and wear obscure the perforation for the pin

A terminal from the foot of an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch (probably), dating c. 475-600.
Of the brooch, only a large terminal from the foot remains, bearing the nostrils and spatulate muzzle shape of the horse-head foot. A small conical hole can be found in the centre of each nosril. The reverse is undecorated. There has been damage to some of the outer edges of the terminal which are very worn, whereas the break above the terminal is less abraded.
The identification of this object as the terminal of a cruciform brooch is only probable. The object is thin relative to its size an…

A cast copper-alloy small long brooch of 6th century date.
The brooch is incomplete, with the incomplete head and only a portion of the upper bow remaining. The bow was probably carinated with notched corners. The head had a square central plate, with integrally cast side and top plates. The lower edge of the sideplates seemed to have merged with the central plate, but only the base of the sideplates remain, and their shape is uncertain. The top of the sideplates, however, were notched, as is visible on one of the sidplates of this brooch. The base of the topplate remains as wel…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy great square-headed brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period, probably 6th century.
The bow bears evidence for a raised central ridge and one side ridge, the other side ridge missing from the fragment. The central ridge has a circular setting for a glass inset, now missing. A slightly raised border angles from the side ridges to the central ridge, and the bow projects past this where it would have connected to the headplate or footplate. The details remaining on the panels between the ridges indicate possible Style I beasts.
The brooch has suffered from…
