An incomplete cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon small long brooch dating to c.AD 450-550. Penn and Brugmann Type sm2 or sm3. The brooch has a trefoil head with circular cut outs between each lobe. The three lateral lobes are broadly sub-oval in shape and extend from a central rectangular block, one of the lobes has traces of ringed dot decoration.  The bow springs out of the headplate, a prominent D-shape in cross-section. The bow tapers gently to a old break. At the junction of the headplate and bow is a transverse ridge. On the reverse, the pin lug is parallel …

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Half of a cast fully-round collared knob from a cruciform brooch, with a tapered channel running down the middle, wider at its inner end, for a pin [lost] to attach knob to brooch. Copper alloy brooch. Cast small long brooch with an unusually formed head comprising a central rhomboid plate expanded to form a flat side lug or knob on either side; five vertically incised lines separate the head from the projections. The form may have resembled a cross pommee when complete, if it is not now. Below the head, a flat platform projects as the top of a curving keeled mid bow. Two or more horizontally incised lines mark the division between this flat part and the keeled part of the mid bow below it. Another moulded rib or stop marks the base of the mid bow. From here, th…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast mid and lower bow of a small cruciform brooch. A plain keeled curving protruding mid bow is set above a narrower tapered lower bow with indistinct traces of two horizontal mouldings. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast head of a spring-fastened small long brooch or a very diminutive cruciform brooch. A plain rectangular plate retains the stubs of integrally cast side knobs and a half-round integrally cast top knob. The latter is collared with a rounded end. Thin paired lugs on the back retain an axis bar for a sprung pin of [probably] three coils of which one coil and a chord now remain. The mid bow was curved or keeled, and the stub of its upper part remains. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-575 Length: 23.8mm, Width: 22.5mm, Thickness (clear of pin gear):…

Copper alloy possible brooch fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast foot from an Anglo-Saxon small cruciform brooch or, given its small size, from a small long brooch. The object is fan-shaped with a convex lower edge and concave sides, and is presumed to have broken from the lower bow at its top edge. Abraded. Cast gilded silver miniature square-headed brooch. The head bears a central motif of three nested rectangles enclosing a horizontal rib, with an outer border of closely juxtaposed stamped circles of diameter 1mm. A curved bow springs from the innermost of the nested rectangles, and has a central longitudinal rib flanked by paired grooves. A U-shaped lug on the back retains the corroded stub of an iron pin. The central rib continues to form the longer shaft of a voided cross potent set centrally in a rectilinear mid-bow expansion with its outer angles curved. There are three small curv…

Copper alloy and iron brooch. Cast copper alloy small long brooch with a wrought iron pin. The brooch has a cruciform head of cross potent form with a curved and keeled projecting mid bow with central longitudinal, and a lightly tapered oval-ended foot with a midpoint cross-ridge, and with a folded catch plate behind it. Iron corrosion suggests the pin was wrapped around paired lugs behind the head; the longer [54.7mm] part of the pin is detached. The entire surface is encrusted with green corrosion products. These mask any fine surface detail. One arm of the head is also lost to a re…

Copper alloy annular brooch fragment. One half of a lightweight sheet metal broad banded annular brooch, torn at either end. The band is decorated by a series of punched dots set equidistantly from each other in two rows which follow the outer edges. This appears to be a crude contemporary imitation of an annular brooch of Anglian style, with more formal stamped decoration represented by the dots. The light fabric is entirely unsuitable to serve as a dress fastener, and was probably equally unsuited to perform other roles in the costume of the time such as chatelaine rings or bag fitt…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Part of the head-plate and the mid bow of a great square headed brooch. The plate, of thickness 1.9mm, has a central rectangular field occupied by an indeterminate angular motif, possibly rendered in Salin Style I. This is set within a rectangular frame embellished by a series of small juxtaposed lozenges. These recur, probably in two orders, outside this frame on a broad outer field. In one corner of the field a larger plain lozenge appears, perhaps part of a symmetrical arrangement though its counterparts are lost along with the opposite edge of the bro…
