Two fragments of an Early Medieval copper-alloy Kentish square-headed brooch dating to AD 500-575. The brooch is broken at the bow. The lower fragment bears part of a central cross, perhaps with expanding arms, with a central circle. The angles are likely to have contained stylised animal motifs in a Salin Style I motif but this is too worn and fragmentary to see with clarity. On the back are the remains of the catch plate. The upper part consists of the small rectangular head plate with raised rectangular molding. On the back are the remains of a single longitudinal pin lug.

Description: A complete disc brooch with straight-sided rim, made of silver, copper alloy and other as yet unknown materials; the complete pin and catch plate survive intact on the back. While the X-rays are unclear due to corrosion and the presence of the pin, the design figures a central boss set with white calcitic material (possibly shell or cuttlefish) within a series of broader and narrower bands. The first ring is broad and appears to have six small, equally spaced settings, possibly rectangular. Outside this is a narrower ring, but no obvious settings. The hinge mechanism is u…

Part of the headplate and bow of a cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon small square-headed brooch. The headplate has an inner rectangular section decorated with four rectangular 'blocks', all surrounded by a beaded border. The bow is framed by a raised beaded edge and has a relief midrib separating two raised zones. A single perforated lug on the reverse of the headplate acts as a hinge, and the corroded remains of the spring survive on this. Although incomplete, this brooch is probably an example of the Kentish-continental series of small square headed brooches (Parfitt and Brugmann 1997, …
