An incomplete copper alloy brooch, of Early Medieval dating (AD 600 to AD 900). Around 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of part of the bow and an incomplete head plate. The head plate is now semi circular in plan, with abraded edges. Traces of diagonal ridges radiating outwards from the bow are present, but the rest of the decorative detail has been obscured. The bow descends from the centre of the lower edge of the head plate. It is triangular in cross section, with a raised rib running centrally down the length. An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, probably representing one half of an Early-Medieval disc brooch. The surviving piece is of flat section and roughly semi-circular, with the straight side representing the point of the break. At the centre of this straight side is half of an originally circular perforation, surrounded by a punched ring. At least seven other ring-and-dot punchmarks cover the remainder of this upper surface. The flat underside of the piece exhibits numerous file marks and has a very dark, almost black, surface patina. There remains no trace of a hinge or catchplate…

An incomplete probable saucer brooch of Early Early Medieval dating (6th to 7th Century AD). Around 25% of the brooch is present, and probably had an original rim diameter of 8 cm. The brooch has suffered from a degree of post depositional damage and is slightly bent. The edge of the brooch still extends upwards at an obtuse angle, but the main saucer part of the brooch is no longer flat but slightly bowed. The reverse of the brooch is plain and undecorated. The catch plate and pin attachment lug are not present. The decoration on the front of the brooch consists of a double pellet…

Description: Fragment of gilded copper-alloy openwork object, probably an 8th- or 9th-century brooch, with a central silver rivet and the remains of iron fittings. About a quarter of the brooch survives, with two iron rivets which originally appear to have attached an iron pin. It can be read as a cross with four flaring arms, each one attached by a pointed apex to the small central roundel through which the tall, round-topped decorative silver rivet is fixed. The best-surviving arm consists of two back-to-back openwork crescent shapes, each with a transverse central bar; the end…

Early medieval gilt copper alloy saucer brooch, 500-600AD. The brooch is 33mm in diameter and 3mm thick. The front of the brooch has a band of disjointed Style I animals around a central boss, and is flat with a raised lip forming the characteristic 'saucer' shape. The reverse is undecorated and a projecting pin housing or part of a catch-plate remains. Close to where the other part of the pin attachment would have been, the object has a very regular circular hole pierced through, midway between the centre and the edge; this is probably a repair. The object has a dark brown patina …

A copper-alloy cruciform/small-long brooch of Early Anglo-Saxon date. The headplate is rectangular, its upper surface incised with a double-grooved saltire. The short bow is of triangular section, its flattened top and bottom ends decorated with transverse grooves and semicircular cut-outs.Three transversely grooved panels also decorate the foot, which is parallel-sided along most of its length, tapering to a point at the bottom, where there is the suggestion of an outward-facing zoomorphic hea…

A copper-alloy fragment of an early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) great square-headed brooch. This piece represents an arm (probably one of three original) from the footplate. It probably originates from a Hines Group I or (less likely) Group II brooch (see Hines, 1997, p. 17-41). From the broken attachment end, the sides taper into two parallel concave sides which then extend into a rounded terminal lobe. The upper surface of the brooch exhibits elaborate relief-moulded decoration. The drop-shaped terminal lobe bears an anthropomorphic head in high relief. This forward-facing head is hea…

A great square-headed brooch dating to the sixth century AD. The brooch is in three pieces, one comprising the frame of the headplate and bow, another the footplate's terminal lobe, and the final one the decorative facing from the left-hand side of the headplate. In all, most of the original brooch is present, and, based on the relative dimensions of the remaining fragments, one can discern that the rectangular headplate's upper corners must have protruded slightly from the upper body of the brooch. The headplate itself would have displayed intricate decoration, with a wide, linear bor…

Only the top section of the brooch remains with the flat trapezoidal head-plate broken at the bottom (the bow and foot are now missing) and a slight nick out of the top left corner of the plate. A small copper-alloy circular disc brooch probably dating from the late early-medieval period. It measures 19.8mm diameter by 1.8mm thick and weighs 2.49g. The upper surface has a raised design of a bird standing facing right with its wings spread. This image is fairly crudely depicted, with a very large hollow eye. It sits within a thin raised circular border. The pin attachment is fairly rudimentary and consists of an upstanding perforated lug opposite a similar lug (damaged) which has had the root at one side cut away to produce a hook-like catchplate. Both pin fixings are relative…
