A complete cast lead alloy circular flat weight with one decorated face. On the decorated face there are five large raised pellets, four equally spaced to form a square and one pellet placed in the centre (also known as a 'quincunx'). The other face is undecorated, with the traces of the lead material of the obverse face and sides having been rolled over onto the reverse face, causing a light crease around the edges. It measures 30.15mm in diameter, 6.13mm thick and weighs 36.5g (1.29 oz). This seems to be a casually produced weight, which is likely to date to either the Roman, med…

TREASURE CASE : 2011 T81. Description: A cast gold object of uncertain date. The object is a strip of bright yellow gold with a rectangular section that has been bent three times possibly as a result of its deposition. Both ends of the strip taper to a point and are slightly twisted. Discussion: There are no diagnostic features on this gold strip that could provide a date. Therefore due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely dated to pre-1708 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 Dimensions: Length: 47.1mm; Width: 4.8mm; …

Circular domed object made from gold, consisting of a circular back sheet, an incomplete filigree collar, and a domed upper sheet. The back sheet is 13.0mm in diameter and was probably originally flat; it is now very slightly concave, around a flat rim underneath the narrow flange running around the domed upper sheet. There are several small indentations, as if the back sheet has been poked repeatedly by a sharp point. There is one tiny circular hole close to the edge and, directly opposite and close to the edge, a tear perhaps through a second hole. The surviving hole is c. 0.6mm in …

Fragment of gold filigree decoration. Two gold wire coils attached with solder to the outer curved side of a central gold rectangular sheet. The sheet is convex and appears as a half-tube in section. In the centre of each gold coil is a gold pellet. There are also two pellets soldered onto the coils and gold sheet aligned to run down the middle of the gold sheet. The half-tube sheet is flush at one end with the tops of the coils and protrudes further than the coils at the other end. At the protruding end there are an additional two pellets that have been soldered on, one at each corne…

A thin gold ring shaped object, with ornate spiralled design and oval lilac stone setting. Dark areas indicate that this object could consist of gold leaf over another material. This may not have originally been a finger-ring; the material is extremely thin, too thin to conceivably be used to construct a finger-ring. It is indicated that the item has been straightened and glued, making identification difficult. The object is not in its original state and so identification in the current condition could be misleading and therefore there is no evidence to date to pre 1711.

Treasure Case 2012 T338: Gold Droplet from Brailes, Warwickshire. Casting waste, comprising a complete amorphous droplet of gold or gold alloy. The droplet measures 14.77mm long, 8.37mm wide and 6.71mm thick, weighing 5.1g. Iron Age coins have been recovered from the same farm (Treasure Case 2012 T726), and it has been suggested that gold such as this may have been connected with Iron Age gold working, such as coin production or recycling. However, a similar piece (2004 T408) was determined to be undiagnostic and undatable following metal analysis.

Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete stone object, possibly a loom weight for a warp weighted loom of uncertain date. The weight, made from fine grained sandstone, is roughly circular in plan though it is now very worn and has an off-centre perforation. Loom weights were used to keep the vertical threads, or warp, tight on a loom during weaving while the horizontal thread, or weft, was passed through the warp. The loom weight is 102mm in diameter, 47.3mm thick and weighs 355g. "Donut" shaped loom weights tend to date to the early-medieval period therefore this is a likely date for this object however due …

Cast copper alloy mount, which was possibly a scabbard mount. This object consists of a large round "button" protruding from one end, a narrow long shaft, and another small possible knop or fixing attachment at the other end. The top of the object has a larger rounded top end and a smaller rounded opposite end, with a ridged shaft of the same width, continuing over the top of both ends. It is unclear exactly what this object is; however, the manner of the ends suggests that this object could have been used to secure an item to leather or to connect two elements together. This is cons…

The edges similarly keyed for enamel with scrolling foliage. The back is decorated with enamel white, green, black and red with a design of a bird in foliage. This pendant has been reassigned to me by the medieval and the modern curators in this Department. I cannot place it in my curatorial area and would suggest that it is either orien…
