A complete flint arrowhead of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 BC - c. 1500 BC). Length 36.8mm, width 27.0mm and 5.7mm thick. Weight 5.21g. The implement is sub-triangular in plan and has been formed on a secondary flake. The ventral surface largely is largely flat but has characteristic ripples which have emanated from a percussion point which was situated a short distance beyond the base of the flake. The dorsal surface is partially covered with cortex of two colours, most being dark brown and the remaining part light brown. To the side of the cortex is an…

A Neolithic or Bronze Age macehead, carved from the basal area of a red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler. The porous core of the antler has been removed, so as to form a hollow cylinder that could easily be hafted to a handle. A large transverse hole (diameter 24.9mm)has been bored through the antler beam, so that it crosses the hollowed out core, and emerges through the cortex on the other face. This perforation is almost perfectly circular, and must have been done with a purpose-made tool. Notably, the edges of the perforation are smooth, relatively sharp, and show no evidence of wea…

A Neolithic polished flint axehead which has been broken widthways and then reworked. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The surviving part of the axe is the larger butt end of the tool. The butt end is rounded, with straight sides and the break is also straight - widthways. The break has also formed a hinge fracture. The axehead looks as if it has been extensively polished in its earlier use, but when it broke it looks as if it has been reworked, as it has also been extensively knapped. A small piece of cortex is still visible, possibly suggesting that the polished …

A polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The axe has been chipped on one blade face and on a portion of the other blade face. The chips are large and uneven, due to the grey-green igneous stone that has been used. The remainder of the axe has been ground smooth. The edge is mostly complete, but the opposite tip of the axe is missing, indicated by a relatively unabraded break.

A Neolithic axehead, the axe is unusual as it has been made from an igneous stone, with is not native to East Sussex. The stone (or indeed the axe) may have originated in the south-west, the north-west or Wales. This is a type of axe that would normally be made out of flint. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The implement has been extensively chipped and ground into a sub-oval shape. One terminal is slightly pointed, the other is rounded. No natural surface is visible on the surface of the axe. The rounded butt end of the axe has been finely ground, to form a precis…

Probably a roughout for a Neolithic polished stone axe. It was initailly described as 'A lithic implement considered to be of Acheulian date (Lower Palaeolithic) and also thought to be a handaxe, of ovate form and very regular. It is quite rounded, probably as a result of wear during burial, although a large amount of the creation process is still visible through the removed flake pattern. The flint is of a light fawn colour, but is so patinised that it is hard to estimate its true colour. This noted, it is reckoned that the fawn is the underlying base colour, overlaid by a yellow …

Incomplete polished flint axe of Neolithic date (4500 BC - 2000 BC). The blade is slightly damaged and the butt is incomplete. Length 119mm, width 56mm and 20mm thick. The axe is of a mid-brown/cream mottled flint which has been knapped then most of the surface subsequently polished. There is a series of neat scaling along both long sides of the axe suggesting a middle to later Neolithic date. There is also some polished scaling remaining along the blade edge. The implement is made of ‘greenstone’ and is mainly dull green but also has some areas that are dark orange. The stone, not an Isle of Wight stone, is a basic igneous rock which has been subjected to low grade metamorphism. Such rocks are common in Devon and Cornwall around the edges of the granite intrusions that form Dartmoor, Exmoor and Lands End. It is sub-triangular in plan (drop-shaped). A polished flint axehead with narrow butt and squared sides. All-over polish with only a few former flake scars present, mainly on butt butt half of axe. Polish is coarse apart from blade end where it is fine. The surface is a mixture of mid brown and grey, possibly partial peat staining. However, one side of the cutting edge has a series of unstained flakes removed at a later date, showing a mid grey flint. These flakes look like retouch but are possibly plough damage that occurred when the axe was buried at the base of the plough line in a sub-vertical position, relatively recently.…

Neolithic polished flint axe. The axe is oval in plan and in cross-section. The axe tapers from cutting edge to butt, and the sides are slightly flattened. There are two long flakes taken off the axe, presumably through damage or wear. One flake is taken off the butt end of the axe on one side, and on the other side the flake is taken off the body. The cutting edge is slightly damaged and shows some degree of polish. The flint is a light mottled grey colour.
