An almost complete cast lead seal matrix of Modern date (c. AD 1850 - c. AD 1920). Diameter 46.8mm, thickness 5.0mm. Weight 53.53g. The seal was used to impress a trader's name and a weight in pounds. It is circular in plan and small portions of the edges are missing due to modern breaks. At the centre, within an indented circle (diameter 28.5mm), is the weight marked in pounds (lb). However, this area has an old scuff mark which has obliterated the numeral. It is quite likely to have read 1/8lb. The inscription around the edge reads (from right to left (viewing an impression): IMPE…

An incomplete cast-in-one lead alloy unidentified object of probable Modern date. Post AD 1800. Length 25.6mm, width 22.3mm and 4.5mm thick. Weight 4.79g. The object is in the form of an eight-spoked wheel, the rim of which has an outer diameter of 21.6mm. One of the spokes projects out 5.7mm from the periphery of the rim. The other spokes probably projected from the rim as well. However, these are missing due to old breaks and just the stubs of each have survived. At the front, within the rim of the wheel, there is a forward facing skull and crossbones motif. On the rear face, at t…

A copper alloy seal matrix fragment or printer's block from the post medieval period. It is rectangular with convex sides and the face is finely engraved with a monogram consisting of the letters "I", "E" and "M" intertwining. The ends of each stroke of the letters are ornate and foliate. There is a small circular hole at each side. This was probably either to fix the matrix to a handle, or if the object is a printing block, may have fitted over pins in the tray to keep the block in position. The block is 17.6mm long, 16.1mm wide and 5.7mm thick. The metal is hard and brassy and may h…

Silver lozenge-shaped bead, hollow, with integral suspension loop and ring; hole at other end. Decorated with applied filigree circles and loops. Though the decoration is reminiscent of that found on 16th Century dress pins reported through the Treasure Act, this object seems to me to be machine-made and consequently much later in date. The form suggests a 19th Century date and my guess is that this is part of an ear-ring of relatively recent manufacture. It does not therefore come under the 1996 Treasure Act (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).

A small portion of the rim survives and the other five edges are in the form of old breaks. The outer face is decorated with three parallel horizontal mouldings. The metal is possibly copper alloy with a white metal coating on both faces. A similar bell frag…
