Cast copper alloy strap slide or mount of uncertain date. It is rectangular in plan with a slightly domed surface. The reverse is hollow and has the remains of two integrally cast lugs with oval cross sections, which may have joined to form a strap bar. The upper surface has cast decoration in the form of four depressed circles arranged in a lozenge, and each circle has between six and eight lines lines radiating outward. There are smaller circular depressions on the corners and at the mid point of each edge. On the two longer edges, the areas between the smaller dots have a double 'V…

A cast copper-alloy belt or strap fitting of possible Late Roman to Early Anglo-Saxon date. It is formed from a single, thick rectangular sheet of copper alloy with rounded ends that is folded so that the ends meet at the attachment end of the object. The two ends are held together by a large cylindrical copper-alloy rivet that has flattened circular heads. This produces a curved, almost U-shaped profile with an oval shaped aperture through which a strap or belt fitting may have passed. On the exterior surface of the curved face there is incised decoration formed from double grooves t…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting or slide of uncertain date. It is missing most of the upper plate due to old breaks. The surviving area of the plate is flat, asymmetrical in form with a diagonal groove at one end and curved sides that taper towards the centre of the plate before terminating in old breaks. Extending from the outer edge of the plate is an integrally cast loop, which is rectangular in form and section, the centre of the loop opposite the plate now curved in profile, possibly as a result o use-wear or post-depositional damage. Copper alloy strap fitting with one side slightly narrower (3mm) than the other three (4.5mm). Length: 34mm, Width: 21.47mm. Weight: 4.9gms. Initially kindly identified as Roman by John Creighton. Helen Geake kindly comments as follows; 'Do you think this might instead be a medieval buckle frame? Filemarks are very common in the medieval period. For comparisons, see BH-5DF483, SF8357, SF7896.'. This reporter would find it invidious to favour one of these authorities over the other, and so a broader date range is now advanced. Suggested date: Unknown Roman to Medieval, 43-1500.

Below these latter are two thin rounded lobes angled diagonally downwards, their bases delineated by incised lines. On the upper surface of the plate is decorated with an incised line around the other three edges. At each end of the plate is an i…
