Roman plated copy of a silver denarius combining aspects of coins of Septimus Severus and Caracalla. The obverse portrait is of Septimius Severus with the legend [ ] AVGVSTVS. The full reading of AVGVSTVS is normally only found on the silver of Caracalla (RIC IV, cf. 50). However, the portrait is undoubtedly that of Severus suggesting that the die engraver has conflated two types. A worn silver early 3rd-century denarius of Caracalla, 'PART MAX PONT TRP V' reverse, Rome mint (203-204 AD; Reece period 10). This coin is probably a contempoary copy the reverse is similar to RIC IV part I p. 222 no 63 although the obverse inscription does not fit and should read ANTONINVS PIVS AVG. The bust also looks similar to the portraits of Geta from the period, although it could plausibly pass as Caracalla.
