A copper alloy Roman strap end, constructed of two separate flat plates joined by a rivet at one end. The terminals of the object are bifurcated and this suggests that the object may also have functioned as a nail cleaner. The trapezoidal upper part tapers and then widens to an oval body. A circular rivet joins the two ends at the top. One side is undecorated. The other side is divided into sections in the upper part with a pair of incised horizontal lines and a single line below. There are four impressed dots below this lower line and there are V-shaped notches at the side edges. …

An incomplete late Roman amphora-shaped strap end, only the attachment end now survives, the rest is missing due to old breaks, now worn. It measures 23.51mm in width and 16.30mm in surviving length. The attachment end is shaped like the open end of a Roman amphora, it then tapers into the narrow neck of the vessel and fragments of the curvilinear handles on either side of the neck survive. The attachment end is split and the upper edges shaped, there is a central copper-alloy rivet through this end. The front face is decorated with ring and dot motifs there are five complete motif…

A copper-alloy object which is probably part of a Roman hinged belt fitting. Four examples of similar objects (with their plates attached, unlike this example) were found in 4th century graves at Colchester (P.Crummy; 1981; pp. 13). The object, which strongly resembles a nail cleaner, has a tongue-shaped proximal (attachment) end and tapers towards the centre; the distal end is narrow and splits at the bottom, where it terminates in two forked points. At the centre point of the horizontal proximal end is a suspension loop, set at right angles to the main part of the object and decor…

A copper-alloy strap end, possibly of the Roman period or possibly of the Medieval period. The object is reminiscent of a Thomas type D strap end, but it has a terminal very similar to the type I. The main body of the strap end is tubular, tapering from the base to the terminal. The tapering is offset by two conjoined, spherical shapes set back from the tip by 6mm. The object could be described as lancet-shaped if it were not for the double-beaded decoration set back from the tip.

The surviving part is incomplete at either end and roughly oval in shape. It measures 24.18mm in length and 16.36mm in width. The front face is decorated with a central longitudinal groove and there are two opposing pairs of ring-and-dot motifs either side of this.

Romano-British Military strap-end: split end with pair of notches on both sides at straight attachment edge and one iron rivet. The rectangular sectioned body tapers past the split before narrowing to a pointed oval but slightly facetted section. After further narrowing an integral terminal ring with stub of small lobe. Cf. an example from South Shields (Allason-Jones and Miket 1984, 188, no.3.595). Length >43mm. Width at attachment edge 7.5mm. External width of terminal loop 12mm. 3rd century.

Incomplete Roman strap fastener. A loop with sub-triangular or trefoil aperture above a transverse rib on both faces. Below this a triangular section bar extends to a break. On two narrower faces part of an engraved inscription, to be read with loop to the left V T [ above F ] Only the first half of the T is present. the second letter on the second line begins with a vertical stroke. The complete text was probably VTERE FELIX (meaning literally 'use happy' i.e. 'good luck to the user'). Tinned or silvered. Length >25mm. Width at loop 12mm, at bar 8mm.

A copper-alloy incomplete probable strap fitting most likely medieval in date. 25.36mm in length and 16.97mm in width. It is rectangular in shape and has a complete rectangular loop at one end, below this it is open work with two opposing oval shaped holes. The edge below these is incomplete and have V-shaped notches in it. Richard Henry (pers comm, 2021) notes that this is in fact a late Roman amphora shaped strap end and parallels include NMS-007A32, KENT-65D2C4 and an example recorded from Richborough (Lyne 1999).

A copper-alloy strap-end or harness fitting of probable 1st century AD date. A close parallel for this piece was found at Camerton, Somerset, in a hoard of military metalwork dating from the 1st Century BC to the 1st century AD (see R. Jackson; 1990; pp. 38; no. 78)*. The object has a tongue-shaped plate which is divided into two panels of moulded decoration. The panel at the distal end (ie. that furthest from the point of attachment, presumably to a leather strap) is defined on the left hand side (as you look at it) by a double raised vertical border and, on the right hand side, by…

Complete cast copper alloy Roman nail cleaner strap end with crescent-shaped lugs. The body of the strap end is formed from a blade which is flat in section. It has distinct sharply sloping shoulders that then taper inwards into the elongated narrow blade, making it lozenge shaped in plan. The blade terminates in a squared off. Blunt point, but is set with a short V shaped groove, which gives the terminal of the strap end a slight fork or bifid end. Though the prongs of the fork may be too short to be effectual, it is clearly reminiscent of a nail cleaner. Extending from the top of …

Roman copper alloy strap end? fragment, 15mm long, 15mm wide and 2mm wide. The object is in fair condition and weighs 1.33grams. The object consists of an incomplete suspension loop which sits on a rectangular sectioned ridge, which is incomplete. Below this the object forms a plate which has a curved upper edge and has snapped off cleanly on all sides, but has a circular cut away section in the middle of what is present. The object appears to be a military fitting, perhaps a strap end?

A bent copper-alloy item, possibly a strap end. The item is 19 mm long and would be around 33 mm in length if straight. It is 7.5 mm in width. One end is pierced with a circuar hole, 2 mm in diameter. The other end is slightly rounded and appears to have been the terminal. Such items are difficult to date, but there is a possibility that this object is Roman, particularly given that many other Roman items have been found in the vicinity.

This strap end is shaped like a Roman amphora and decorated with ring and dot ornament on its upper or show surface. It is very nearly complete. The entire strap end is 42.5mm long, and terminates with a small nipple at the base or tip. The belly of the vessel (as it is suggested by the form of the strap end) is 19.5mm across. It tapers in slightly above to the shoulder, which is 17mm across, at which point the two handles of the amphora are suggested and the 'vessel' tapers abruptly to a concave-sided neck 7mm wide at its top and base but only 5mm wide at its centre. The bars of the h…

Copper-alloy object, perhaps a strap end. The heavy solid cast strap end consists of a bulbous terminal and two roughly rectangular arms pierced by an iron rivet for attachment to the strap. Parallels have been recorded on the PAS database, e.g. SWYOR-1D5F98, LIN-3606A4 and SF9057, but the date and function of these items is still uncertain. Another, perhaps similar, item decorated with a Romanesque-style animal head can be found on the PAS database at WILT-8F33A4. A further example, but with a hollow head, comes from Thetford (Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig. 112, no. 52); this was a…
