A copper-alloy strap end spacer of medieval date. It is rectangular in plan with a central collared knop extending from the centre of the bar. One arm of the bar is broken. The protruding knop is of hexagonal section, narrowing towards the terminal. The plate of the spacer is a flat, rectangular plate of rectangular section. It was attached to the other plates of the spacer by way of copper-alloy rivets one of which survives. The form is quite unusual as most spacers are forked but the knop is quite similar to those in Egan and Pritchard (1991), p. 144. It is likely to the fourteenth …

An incomplete copper alloy strap end of medieval date. All that remains is part of the forked spacer of a composite strap end which has a double collared acorn-style terminal. The forked spacer arms taper slightly in width and terminate in worn breaks. File marks are present on the surface of the spacer as a result of the shaping and finishing process. The metal has a dark brownish-green patina and is worn. Traces of iron corrosion are present on the shoulders of the object which suggest the use of iron pins in securing the object when complete. The object is 49.3mm long, 23.4mm …

Incomplete medieval copper-alloy composite strap end with a sheet spacer that occupies the whole width. The spacer survives complete, but only a fragment of either the front or rear plate is extant, terminating at the attachment end in a worn break. Both are shield-shaped with fairly parallel sides and a pointed tip. They are joined by a single rivet near the tip and by a layer of hard whitish material which is probably solder. There are further traces of this material on the opposite face of the spacer. There appears to be a second rivet at the top of the spacer (beyond the break…

An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period, in the 9th century AD. The strap-end is rectangular in cross section. In plan the majority of the body is thin and narrow, widening and flattening slightly at its end for a zoomorphic terminal (which is almost sub-oval). Above the narrow neck is a triangular split end. This triangular split end is broken such that the terminal and both the rivet holes in it are now missing. The upper surface of the plate has incised decoration on both the triangular split end and zoomorphic terminal. While only trac…

A complete copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 750-950. The strap-end is flat in profile and sub-rectangular in plan its long edges being slightly convex widening slightly after its upper end before narrowing again towards its squared off terminal. The strap end is slit down the side for approximately one fifth of its length creating a slit between the front and back. This would have held the end of the strap. Two rivets holes are visible near the terminal of the split end (each c.1.7mm diameter) with the upper plate being slightly chi…

A fragment of an Early Medieval cast copper alloy openwork strap end, dating from AD 875 - 1100. It can be classified as Thomas' Class E. Only part of the middle survives. The strap end would have been tongue shaped (rectangular, probably with a rounded closed end). It has a series of holes giving an openwork pattern probably representing either a plant design (Class E type 1) or anthropomorphic decoration (Class E type 2), but not enough survives to tell which. Measurements are; length 25.5mm, width 16.1mm, thickness 2.1mm and weight 2.31g. …
