Copper alloy strap end. A cast button knop is set at the end of two split sheets at the butt end. The form of the object is also very similar to that of a massy ball-ended late medieval or early post-medieval strap end, though the source record here asserts a Middle Saxon date. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Early Post-Medieval, 800-1650 Length: 18.8mm, Width: 9.4mm, Thickness: 8.8mm, Weight: 4.17gms

A complete cast copper-alloy late Roman artefact known as a 'nail-cleaner strap-end'; it could have been either or both. It is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in section. At one end is a pair of prominent crescent-shaped lugs. They are characteristic of the main group within this object type (Eckardt with Crummy 2006, 87; fig. 3). Below the neck of the object the sides gradually expand outwards towards the base. The object is split from the base up to just below the neck. The strap would have been held in this split and the rivet which secured it is intact. The upper surf…

A complete copper-alloy strap end, probably of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). It has a rectilinear split end and is parallel-sided; the split end has a single, centrally placed circular rivet hole. The terminal is decorated with a single bold circumferential raised moulding above an ovate knob which is conical beneath. The metal is a mid brown in colour. Compare SF-19FAB0 and NMS-175DC1, and strap-ends without the moulding and with more prominent rounded knobs, such as LIN-3606A4. All of these strap-ends are difficult to date, but parallels from Chapman 2005 are cited on the record of …

The front face is decorated with an incised cross and is openwork with triangular notches cut into the edges to make each quarter of the front plate into a trefoil shape. Car has been used to leave enough metal that the two plates are still joined where they were bent. The reverse plate is not decorated and is a plain square. An asymmetrical strap end or mount with a separate sheet backplate attached with two rivets. The larger end of the mount is heart-shaped, and the smaller end is in the form of a trefoil or fleur-de-lis. The rivet at the larger end is separate and of iron, and the one at the smaller end is integral with the copper-alloy mount. It is likely that both rivets were originally of the integral type, and the iron rivet, and possibly the backplate, represent a makeshift repair. Recorded on UKDFD No 10494 also refer to UKDFD No 3400. Brian Read:- Metal Artifacts of Antiquity. From UKDFD.

A cast copper alloy strap end or similar strap fitting. The object is formed from a single piece of copper alloy. The main body is rectangular in section, but swollen in the centre, tapering down to either terminal. The terminal proper has a collar and a rounded knop. At the other end there is a collar and then the remains of a split joint, which would have held the leather strap. Only the back plate survives and the break is very worn. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour and it is very pitted. This strap end is likely to be post-medieval in date, as it does not fit into the…

Copper alloy Strap end. Cast plate with a long projecting triangular section integrally cast knop with three notches at a stepped collared base. The plate was originally circular or oval though the edges are now chipped, and an iron rivet passed through its centre, presumably to attach this to a strap. The use of an iron rivet and the robust construction could both suggest a use with horse harness. The knop is now bent where it springs from the plate. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Length: 35.8mm, Width: 19.3mm, Thickness (at knop): 5.1mm, Weight: 8.26gms.
