One piece of a two-piece Romano-British strap-end of unusual, short form. Single rivet near straight attachment edge which carries four V-sectioned notches on the front face. The sides taper strongly before expanding into openwork lobes. Beyond these the object ends in two small and asymmetrically placed projections. The triangular shape and the lobes are reminiscent of a strap-end from Winchester, dated c.350 - 37/90 (Clarke 1979, 281-2, fig. 36 no. 128). 18 x 14mm. Thickness 1mm. Rivet projects 1.5mm from reverse.

An incomplete, late Roman, amphora shaped, copper alloy strap end. Both sides of the object are decorated with ring and dot patterns and one face has a lozenge shape picked out in a double row of punched dots. The upper half of the strapend has broken off at the holes that attached it to the belt. It is not possible to be sure whether the strap end had a pair of kidney shaped holes or plain circular ones to rivet it to the belt.

A fragment of a copper alloy artefact, probably part of a Roman strap end of the round bottom amphora type dating from AD 300 - 410. It consists of part of a flat, circular body with an oval knop depending from the bottom edge and the remains of two curved handles at the top. The centre of the outer edge of the knop has two small grooves. The remaining decoration consists of three incised ring and dot motifs arranged at three of the cardinal points of the compass. There was probably a fourth ring and dot at the East position, now missing. There are also faint traces of ring and dot in…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Late Roman amphora-shaped strap end. The slightly curved undecorated leaf-shaped body narrows from the neck that has two kidney shaped holes suggesting amphora handles. The terminal of the body is now missing. At the top of the strap end are two integral perforated lugs representing a hinge type attachment. Through the centre of these are the remains of an iron pin. The surviving length is 54.1mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness of the body is 1.9mm and the thickness of the lugs is 7.7mm.

At one end is a D-shaped loop, the straight forming the end (12.8mm long). On either side it slightly overlaps the arms of the D, which is decorated with light diagonal grooves. Beyond this is a flat pointed-oval 8.4mm long, topped with a flat knop (3.9x4.4mm) and decorated slightly off-centre with a single tiny hole. An incomplete cast copper-alloy 'amphora-shaped' strap end of late Roman date (300-450 AD). The strap end is broadly sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The edges of the strap end have slightly beveled / faceted edges. The strap end is incomplete in that the upper part of the strap fitting has been lost. It is possible that originally this was iron as an orange corrosion product is present on many of the surfaces (although this may be a result of the burial conditions. The upper part of the strap end has two pierced sub-oval (kidney) shaped holes which are irre…

A copper-alloy sheet plate from a late Roman heart-shaped strap-end. The main body of the plate takes the form of an inverted heart. An incomplete copper alloy strap end of Roman date. It consists of a flat copper alloy disc with a central circular perforation, which at the top would have had a suspension loop that is now missing due to old breaks. The central perforation would once have held a rivet for attachment to the now missing suspension loop that would have projected from the top of the disc and folded over to taper down the back of the disc. On the exterior face around the central perforation are four concentric grooves. Around the edge of the upper face are regular chip carved triangles interspersed by sma…

An incomplete copper-alloy amphora-shaped strap-end of probable mid 4th to mid 5th century date. These distinctive strap-ends are thought to have been worn on belts as part of late Roman military uniform (see Bishop and Coulston, 1993, p. 174-6). Other examples on the PAS database include SF-123771 and NLM-6B81B0.
The strap-end is of thin section and has flat surfaces. The main part is pointed-oval in plan. The upper surface has an outer border of segmented, ropework, form. Immediately inside this is a plain incised groove. At the centre is a lozengiform arrangement of four punched …

Roman strap end; cast copper alloy heart-shaped strap end of probable 4th century date. The form of this strap end is a variant of the amphora strap ends and, as such, has an openwork, double-lobed 'handle' to either side near the attachment end. There is a neck between the handles, which expands below them to a broad, rounded plate with two lobes at the terminal end, giving an overall heart shape to the strap end. The attachment end is split into two small, roughly rectangular plates which were held onto the strap with a single, circular rivet in the centre. The rivet is still presen…
