Copper alloy Strap End. Cast rectangular object with a plate attached to one side of which a thin strip projects. This strip bears five stitch holes of diameter 1mm. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly identifies this as a strap end for use with a fabric belt. Decoration of the main cast element comprises a central oblong panel bearing seven tiny bosses in a linear border, surrounded by a row of tiny sub-triangular bosses beneath an arcade of semi-circles, all modelled in relief. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Length: 25.7mm, Width: 13.8mm, Thickness: 5mm, Weight: 5.13gms

A complete cast copper-alloy strap end. This strap end is roughly triangular, 55mm in length and 23mm in width at its attachment end i.e, the widest point. This strap end is 3mm thick and fairly crudely made. The strap end has a central trapezoidal hole cut through it. Around this there is a border groove. At the attachment edge there are two circular rivet holes. One has the remains of corroded iron within it, so presumably iron rivets were used. The terminal of this strap end takes the shape of a forward-facing animal's head, with pointed oval ears, large oval eyes and a…

Incomplete and rather peculiar copper alloy strap-end. It is 57mm in length and max 31mm wide. The central part of the strap-end is widest and circular. It has the remains of 3 upstanding rivets, which have been inserted through the backplate. Apparantly a rectangular piece crossed the strap end here, over the rivets, joining with the rectangular end projecting from the circular area (measures 21x20mm) and the other projection from the circular area, an animal head. Two long 'ears' project backwards to join the remains of the 18mm wide strip. Either side of this strip are two semi-cir…

Cast white metal strap end with rounded end and straight 'broken' side, which appears to be a cast copy of a broken Anglo-Scandinavian strap end. The back of the strap end has lumps of red and green corrosion product, which suggests it has been in the soil for at least 50 years, and a central raised lump which is not a rivet but copper alloy corrosion. The metal is very brittle and powders, unlike silver, and it looks to be a matt white metal alloy which would also explain the colour of the corrosion. The object has been troy tested and it is definitely base metal and not silver. It a…

Replica Jellinge style strap end dating from the early 21st century. The interlace decoration on the strap end is not an exact replica from a known strap end; however, the design was made up based on known Jellinge-style decorated metalwork. The type of decoration was used on Scandinavian or Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork in the 10th century and there are many examples on the PAS database. Normally artefacts dating from the 20th/21st century are not recorded on the PAS database, but this enty was made to showcase a very accurately made replica of an early medieval strap end used, a…

A cast tin alloy early medieval-style strap-end. The object is sub-rectangular in plan with a squared off terminal end and sides which taper in width down to a rounded zoomorphic head. In the centre of the object is a sub-rectangular recessed panel containing a moulded interlace design in relief. The interlace extends to form the head and snout of the animal. Above the head, to either side, are a pair of stylised ears with lobed tips containing a small circular depression. Below these to either side of the head are a pair of almond shaped eyes. The top end of the object is worn and…

A heavy, silver strap end, probably made during the 20th century AD. The strap end is roughly rectangular in plan with the bottom two corners removed. The top of the strap end is slightly thinner than the main plate of the strap end and contains three rivet holes, two of which retain silver rivets. The rivet holes have been made by piercing from the front of the strap end through to the reverse, where the excess silver has simply been flattened around the hole. The front of the plate is highly decorated, although crudely executed. The decoration is as follows: Beneath the top rivet sec…
