Incomplete Copper Alloy object. Possibly a brooch or a clasp. The object has a flat leaf like shape, which appears to be broken at its pointed end; there is a small circular perforation at its base on its obverse side. The base tapers into a ‘stalk’ which then curls back on itself. The reverse of the object is plain and undecorated, but the perforation is clear. The object has a green and brown patina and has a rough and uneven texture. The object weighs 6.3g and is 51.97mm length and 22.70mm in width tapering to 12.41mm at its pointed end. It’s exact date and function is unknown.

A fragment of copper-alloy object, possibly part of a crudely manufactured Roman bow brooch dating to the first to third century AD. The object is hemispherical in section and tapers slightly towards one end, which is broken. The upper surface of the object is notched horizontally, but the notches do not appear to form a coherent pattern. The object measures 19mm in length and 8mm at its widest. Alternatively, this object may be a fragment of a junction loop used in horse harness. See Chapman 2005, Figure T for examples of junction loops with similar terminals. Alternative identifi…

An incomplete gold dog brooch of uncertain date, possibly early Post-Medieval. This three dimensional brooch seems to have been hollow or at least the body was hollow. The dog is positioned left with the head turned forwards. One ear is missing however the ear nearest the tail survives in good condition. All four legs are missing and there is a break across the chest area that is now filled with mud. The curled tail survives. The nose, mouth and eyes are very detailed and the dog wears a loose fitting collar that swivels around it's neck. On the reverse a hinged pin, now bent, and cat…

The horse, which is galloping to the right, is well defined and has a small head with pronounced ears projecting slightly forwards. The eye is in the form of a small annulet. The tail and the hind leg below the knee a…

The brooch is decorated with an outer raised border with a further inner border, 2mm in from the edge. This is filled with what is now red enamel. Inside this are four raised semi-circles which are arranged so they form a cross motif, two are filled with red enamel and one with blue, the last is empty but presumably was originally blue as well. There is a raised circle inside the 'cross' 2mm in diameter. Its reverse has tra…

Roman copper alloy Polden Hill booch fragment. The crest of the head is quite rounded and the bow tapers to a point at the end, although no foot remains. The hinged pin, catchplate and pin mechanism are all missing. The brooch is quite corroded all over but it is quite likely that this brooch would have been plain anyway.

Incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (the Dolphin, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46.It is of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are missing. It is likely that the pin / spring would have been attached by an external chord to a (now broken) rearward facing hook. The remnant of this hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. The reverse of the head of the brooch (between the two wings) has an unusua…
