A fragment of copper-alloy object, possibly part of a crudely manufactured Roman bow brooch dating to the first to third century AD. The object is hemispherical in section and tapers slightly towards one end, which is broken. The upper surface of the object is notched horizontally, but the notches do not appear to form a coherent pattern. The object measures 19mm in length and 8mm at its widest. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is…

Incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 5, Group 2.b1, enamelled panel on upper bow, lenticular elements cast below, flat wing ends type). The wingspan is 27.2mm and the circular closed ends extend beyond the wings thickness, appearing to the front as raised ribs. Otherwise the wings are plain.
