This Roman bow brooch in copper alloy, is circa the second half of the 1st century AD. It is in the form of the 'Polden Hill' type brooch. It has the characteristic semi cylindrical wings in which the spring sits on the axis bar, which in turn is held by the pierced plate at the wing tips. A simple backward lug holds the chord in place. The head of the bow has a central knurled rib running down the spine and there are pronounced shoulders where the bow meets the wing. The lower half of the brooch and the pin are missing.

Roman copper alloy brooch fragment of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands) style, dating to the late1st to early 2nd century AD. The fragment consists of the head of the brooch with a small amount of the bow and the front of the wings. The wings are very short and small, which the head is large, rounded and deeply curved. An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Hod Hill, Brooch (c. AD 43 – c. AD 75). Overall length: 25.1mm; maximum width across the bow: 16.3mm and maximum thickness: 3.3mm. Weight: 2.25g. The lower half of the bow, the axis bar and the pin are missing. The top of the head is curled over in a forwards direction to form a tube (the wings) that held the axis bar. However, half of this curled over element is missing due to an old break. There is no iron staining on the upper part of the brooch to suggest that the axis bar or the pin was made of iron. Fragment of a cast copper alloy, Romano-British brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Transitional Type 3). Semi-cylindrical tube with a perforated disc at each end to accommodate the central chord of the coiled spring. Traces survive of the hook at the end of the brooch that secured the return of the spring. The wings are decorated with double incised lines across which is a pattern of short, incised lines. Incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (The Dolphin, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b. Plate 46. The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are complete and the axis bar and spring are present, the pin is lost.
