Roman copper alloy bow brooch, 42mm long, 18mm wide and 16mm thick. The brooch is in fair condition with a brown patina and weighs 11.9grams. The brooch has short circular sectioned wings which hold a spring of seven coils and part of a pin. The bow is semi-circular in section and is decorated with a vertical band of raised squares set in a recess. This band terminates with two diagonally aligned raised ridges and below this the bow narrows. The base of the bow and catchplate are missing and the brooch is encrusted with solidified soil?

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman Hod Hill brooch of mid first century (c. AD 43 - c. AD 70). Length: 12.8mm; Width: 15.0mm and 2.1mm thick. Weight: 0.89g. The fragment is part of the upper bow and a small portion of the head. Mid-way along the width of the head there is a slot for the pin. The bow has four vertical flutes. Viewed from the side, the fragment is slightly curved. All the breaks are old and both faces have a patchy mid-green patina interspersed with copper alloy corrosion products.

The brooch is very plain and consists of solid circular sectioned wings which hold the remains of a hinged pin. The bow is circular in section and contains just the traces of a catchplate.

The brooch has a triangular sectioned bow, the point of which rises to become a crest near the top. The wings are semi-circular in section and hollow to allow for a spring. The catchplate is almost intact and is triangular in form, with a slight lip.

The lower part of the bow, including the catch-plate, and the pin are missing due to old breaks. The wings, which have an overall width 36.2mm, are cylindrical (or tubular) and fully enclose a complete copper alloy axis bar. Roman cast copper alloy skeumorphic type swastika brooch. The brooch is complete with the pin and catch mechanism still in place. The pin is on a hinge and has seized up with age/corrosion. The catch consists of a hook set at 90degrees to the lower arm. A very similar example can be seen in Hattatt's book (1987; 222-225; no. 1145). This type of brooch generally dates to the second half of the second century running into the 3rd century AD. An incomplete copper-alloy Colchester type two-piece brooch of 1st century date. The wings have a recessed underside containing four or five coils of the spring. The pin and axis bar are absent and there is a damaged rearward lug. The humped bow is of circular section and tapers to a point at the foot. Extending the length of the bow is a central ridge. Only a remnant of the catchplate survives. The brooch is bent and corroded. The artefact measures 36.6mm long, 24.4mm wide (wings) and 16.9mm deep. The weight is 7.48g.

A Roman copper-alloy disc brooch. The circular brooch is of thin section and has a cast geometric design in its upper surface, defined by low, flat-topped ridges. Early Roman brooch: an incomplete copper alloy brooch of the Polden Hill type with flat wing ends. The brooch has a gently curving, undecorated bow, and is in good condition, but the spring and pin have been lost, and the thin catchplate has been truncated. Nonetheless, the spring casing, complete with the covered ends (pierced for receipt on an iron axis bar) is preserved, and this allows the brooch to be identified as being of Polden Hill type, which dates to the period AD 50 and 70, and is best represented in the south of England. The object consists of the upper part of a headstud brooch which has short circular sectioned hinged wings and is missing its central loop. The upper part of the bow is present and is rectangular in secion and c. 6mm wide, it has triangular protrusions on each side which flank a central circular recess, 5mm in diameter. below this the brooch is plain and has snapped cleanly.
