A Roman Headstud brooch with attached chain made of copper alloy. Headstud brooches date from 75 - 175 AD. Each brooch would have been worn on the shoulder and the chain would have been suspended between them.
The head of the brooch features the ringed headstud. It contains a vertical/horizontal cross decoration. The ring appears to be plain with no decoration. The wings are short and decorated with two incised vertical grooves. The wings are tubular, and the hinge mechanism has been built into it. A very fine and elaborate Roman Headstud brooch made of copper alloy. Headstud brooches date from 75 - 175 AD. Each brooch would have been worn on the shoulder and the chain would have been suspended between them. The head of the brooch features a rounded triangular raised area, with a depression in the centre. This would have held the headstud. The headstud has been lost. An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Knee brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. The brooch is in a T-shape comprising the horizontal wings and a high arched bow. The head has a triangular section, with a raised horizontal ridge across the front. There is a worn stump on the top of the head, which would have represented the head loop. An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester type brooch of Roman date. Only the pin and the catchplate are missing. Behind the head the spring mechanism can be seen though it is now bent and broken. The head itself is wide and tapers straight into the bow which has a triangular section due to a central raised spine. To either side of the head is a decoration consisting of two vertical incised lines and a hook with boss is present looped over the spring and onto the head. An incomplete cast copper alloy knee brooch, dating to the period AD 150 to 220. The head and upper bow and spring all survive. The lower bow, foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The head is formed from a semi-circular, flat plate. It is undecorated. An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch, with traces of gilding on the reverse. The brooch is circular with six knops extending out from the edge of the brooch, three on each side. In between the sets of knops are two breaks, which could represent the lug and catchplate, as neither of these survives. The brooch has a raised rim on the front, but no other details can be seen. Silver Roman trumpet brooch fragment Date: 1st - 2nd Century
A fragment of a silver trumpet brooch, dating from 75-175 AD. All that survives is the central section of the bow which features the acanthus moulding. The head and upper bow have broken off, therefore exposing the hollow section of the upper bow. Around this area is a wide collar that goes right the way around the brooch. Headstud brooch with a hinge pin. The wings are short and tubular to hold the axis bar. There are three lozenges in each wing with traces of blue enamel. The remaing triangular spaces between each lozenge have traces of red enamel. The bow has an unperforated lug at the top with a space for the stud (now missing). A row of blue enamel lozenges with red enamel behind runs down the length of the bow.
