A very fine and elaborate Roman Headstud brooch made of copper alloy. Headstud brooches date from 75 - 175 AD. Each brooch would have been worn on the shoulder and the chain would have been suspended between them. The head of the brooch features a rounded triangular raised area, with a depression in the centre. This would have held the headstud. The headstud has been lost. The wings are short and decorated with four incised vertical grooves. No head loop survives. The reverse of the wings are chucky and rectangular, broken on both ends. The axis bar is still visible. In the centre of…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester type brooch of Roman date. Only the pin and the catchplate are missing. Behind the head the spring mechanism can be seen though it is now bent and broken. The head itself is wide and tapers straight into the bow which has a triangular section due to a central raised spine. To either side of the head is a decoration consisting of two vertical incised lines and a hook with boss is present looped over the spring and onto the head. The bow is fluted to either side of the rib. The sides of the bow are straight for the most part but taper to a circ…

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch, with traces of gilding on the reverse. The brooch is circular with six knops extending out from the edge of the brooch, three on each side. In between the sets of knops are two breaks, which could represent the lug and catchplate, as neither of these survives. The brooch has a raised rim on the front, but no other details can be seen. The reverse is flat and undecorated but traces of gilding are evident. Brooches of this basic form are known from the Roman period and from the late 10th or 11th century and it is difficult to know which period t…

Silver Roman trumpet brooch fragment Date: 1st - 2nd Century
A fragment of a silver trumpet brooch, dating from 75-175 AD. All that survives is the central section of the bow which features the acanthus moulding. The head and upper bow have broken off, therefore exposing the hollow section of the upper bow. Around this area is a wide collar that goes right the way around the brooch. It also has a thinner collar above and below it. The acanthus moulding then begins; it is formed from a lozenge shaped section, with three 'leaves' flaring outward and down at the top and upward from…
