A cast copper-alloy fragment of a Roman knee brooch dating to the 2nd century or 3rd century AD. This brooch has broken at a mid point on the bow; the upper bow, head, spring mechanism and pin were all lost as a result. In profile the bow was S shaped; the lower 'C' survives. As the upper bow would have been, the leg is a thick strip, rectangular in cross-section. As implied, the leg is concave, curling round on itself at the foot. Around the point of break there is a transverse moulded ridge on both faces. The lowermost is on the rear and marks the start of the moulded upper bow. The…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of an eagle (c. 2nd century AD). The losses are confined to the lower surface on which the pin lug is abraded and the pin lost. The plate is flat by nature, but slightly curved in profile as a result of old damage, with the tail bent downwards somewhat in particular. The bird faces to the right with a pointed beak and a possible shallow indentation for the eye, filled with what appears to be niello. The neck of the bird curves and expands to form a wider body in which six cells are present (these lead down to the b…

The double pierced lug is situated behind the head as is characteristic of this type. The axis bar, rectangular in cross-section, survives in situ within the lower perforation. The chord is retained within the upper perforation, seemingly slightly twisted. On both sides it continues into the spring mechanism, the latter consisting of three loops to both sides of the head. A cast copper-alloy Roman T-shaped brooch of initial type dated to later 1st to mid-2nd century AD. The brooch survives quite well, only having suffered some post-depositional damage and the loss of its pin. The head has tubular wings, each with a terminal ridge. There is a further ridge either side of the wide head. The axis bar is largely obscured by the wings, but would appear to be made from iron judging by orange corrosion product both at the wing terminals and within the pin slot. The pin is missing. Copper-alloy annular brooch of probable Roman date. Broad band, slightly concave towards centre. Irregular, poorly abraded concentric band. On the reverse is a broken catchplate, and a single pin lug where the missing pin would have been attached. Both are set perpendicular to the edge of the brooch. Chipped slightly at periphery. Annular brooches are reasonably common in early Anglo-Saxon contexts, although the pin arrangement differs from this example in having a perforation through the band to take a pin. Therefore this example is unlikely to be early Anglo-Saxon in date. Com…
